I thought I'd add a picture or two to the mix here if you don't mind. We had 18 inches here and of course the wind. It was definitely the biggest snow I've ever seen here, although I'd seen bigger when I was off at college and the years I lived away from my hometown for a few years after.

Ripping!

Great shot.

One year ago today at 5:00PM we had this...

METAR KLAF 312154Z 09015KT 1/4SM +SN VV007 M06/M09 A3017 RMK AO2 SNB17 SLP226 P0000 T10611094

At 7:00PM it had turned over to this...

METAR KLAF 312354Z 08015G23KT 8SM UP FEW013 OVC021 M07/M09 A3011 RMK AO2 UPB23SNE23 SLP206 P0001 60002 T10671094 11039 21067 56034

The rest was history.

I remember that burst on the 31st. Another example of how a poorly timed inch of heavy snow can cause chaos on our streets.

A year later and mostly sour grapes in this thread, surprising...

There was a lot to like about this storm. The several days lead up discussions were great. Regardless of how much snow fell in my backyard, it was some of the most frequent TSSN from a storm I can ever remember (and I think I only witnessed one flash), and the magnitude of warm and cold conveyors were amazing. Approaching 75 kts in the NE cold conveyor is incredible. When those gravity waves started ripping back to the west, eminating out of the northern Illinois convection, it was something else.

My write up, and pretty much the last thing I did at DVN before the move to GYX.

Well, look at the locations of the sour grapes posters. ;) Of course it was a great storm for the region overall and I think there are quite a few reminiscing about it fondly...but there is/was a portion of people that got screwed over with sleet or didn't get "enough" snow. But thems the breaks in every major storm.

Great write up BTW.

They didn't have to twist my arm to review that storm. There were just so many interesting facets.

Yeah I bet. :D

It was a fascinating storm. Even though I got "screwed over" here with sleet, it'll go down as one of my favorite storms ever to experience. It was quite the ride here on the forums and with the actual weather.

I agree the discussion on here was great leading up to it.

And it probably doesn't help much, but the fact that you got that much sleet is a rarity in itself. It was said earlier, it's a transitional ptype, not usually the dominant type.

I spent grad school in Lowell, MA for the Valentine's Day storm, and that was quite literally 6"+ of pure sleet. Terrible storm for my north facing bay window in my studio apartment. Tough to sleep through that sound.

I have an appreciation for the amount of sleet that occurred here, no doubt about it. Remarkable really. Never seen anything like that in my life. But of course snow is king...and it wasn't too far way to our north/northwest.

Ha ha, my bedroom window faces west...so I know what you're talking about. The sound is quite unique. Speaking of V Day, it was of course pure snow here...to the tune of 17.0". :)

This time last year I was on campus in classes. About noon the Chancellor announced classes must end by 2:30pm and everybody that commuted should go home! Some light lake effect was falling at this time.

The real system snow started at about 3:30pm.

Yep. I worked in the campus library at MU that afternoon, and found out while still on campus that classes were canceled for the next day Groundhog Day. First and only time that's happened in my 18 years of schooling.
