turtlehurricane
That is pretty cool. Great photo, too. It seems like we have run into a 'dead period' per se in regards to getting these down here -- but then again they seem to be incredibly rare to begin with..so the dead period may be more of a normal period. We had a very long solar minimum, that's why. We're heading back towards the maximum now.

Just don't want anyone to think they missed anything.... from a geomagnetic sense what happened last night was as common as thunderstorms in Miami. aslkahuna
An X1 Flare from region 1402 this afternoon. A high speed CME was produced but it's not expected to be geoeffective at this moment though a sideswipe is possible. Steve.
aslkahuna
Update: The flare caused a Cat 3 Radio Blackout event and so far the Proton flux ay > 10 MeV and>100MeV are at Cat 2 levels and still rising.. Steve
QVectorman
steve, can you elaborate a little bit on what this means for us I e satellites power grids etc. sorry, I am not caught up on the solar lingo yet lol
aslkahuna
steve, can you elaborate a little bit on what this means for us I e satellites power grids etc. sorry, I am not caught up on the solar lingo yet lol The CME is expected to miss us so no big Gemag which would be a problem for power grids is expected. The current levels of Proton flux are causing some image degradation on the Solar spacecraft and some communications issues in the Polar latitudes due to the Polar Cap Absorption event. Steve so that is the definition of a cat 3 radio blackout? some communication issues at the polar latitudes? Thanks!
