I think it's time to concede that this winter, astoundingly, will not feature a somewhat extended period of winter weather. Per the NE subforum, the EURO ensembles look like the GFS through D10. That is, dry, NW flow with heavily modified arctic air located across northern sections. Then +PNA breaks down and we're flooded with pacific air again beyond D10.

The only thing to look forward to is the possibility of a snowstorm. Rooting for snowcover, cold, frequency of snowfalls, total snowfall are all lost causes as far as I can see. In a few weeks, we're already into that time of year where those characteristics become less likely even in a normal winter.

This seriously reminds me of Feb 2002

Yeah, and then you and I are both going to hate it when the bottom falls out and we get another May 2011. :bag:

Let's hope not. But this was the perfect winter to get some new zone 7 plants through their first winter. So if May has to suck a little, it was worth it.

Looks like we torch through spring. Love it. This has been the best winter ever. Ground is not even frozen here anymore. Upper 40s tomorrow should take care of the remaining piles.

Actually have some greening of the grass around here.. Remarkable for the time of year. Gas bills are way low!

Now this I have definitely not noticed. Some grass is not as dead as it usually is, but certainly have not seen any greening of grass lol. F*ck severe weather, f*ck spring. I dont care if we are buried in snow on Easter, bring on snow whenever. Hoping this MJO stuff shows something in a week or two, but we will see.

He's trolling hardcore.. Ohio doesn't even have green grass..

No its not, I'm in Ohio and it is still brown. Maybe Michigan grass is tougher.

Yeah, I got some shades of green. Definitely not as "dead" as last year, but that is hardly a surprise.

I mean grass will always have some hints of green in it lol. but when you look at the big picture driving down the road its a brown winter landscape. And fwiw the only snow piles left here now are in some of the bigger parking lots (the mall will have them for quite some time, other than that not too many noticeable ones). My goodness last year we were discussing snow depths with a yardstick, this year its shades of grass.

...Looks like "Guns N' Roses" is doing a show in Chicago on Feb 19th...

Saw them back somewhere in the early 2000s with Buckethead on lead guitar. Was a surprisingly awesome show. It was nice to see Axl Rose show up and perform after all the concerts he either didn't show up to, or walked out of.

25 here and very foggy.

ECMWF ENS control continues to show the overall mild pattern continuing through the 16th at least...and it has been consistent in showing this for the past several days.

Then take it to the bank. Slam dunk easy call for the Euro ens. this winter.

I can see it now. Mild weather continues through February, then we get a spread the wealth, power outage-inducing, limb breaking, heart attack pile of cement in March.

This winter = 2001-02, 1997-98. It happens. Unprecedented for a La Nina though AFAICT. Maybe 88-89 comes close, but December that year was apparently frigid.

Actually December 1988 was a tad above (not by much, though) normal temperature-wise for Toronto. January 1989 was a torch, but February and March 1989 were below normal. I remember the St. Patrick's day winter storm that winter. 4" of snow followed by freezing rain. Biggest snowfall that winter.

Outside of two weeks in January 1999, is this one that much different than 1998-99? Of course I'm looking at it from a IMBY angle. The monthly stats (avg temp/total snowfall) below at ORD for that winter. January 1-14 was an island of winter in a sea of blowtorch warmth. Of course it produced very well during that stretch...but if that doesn't happen, it goes down as one of the worst DJF periods ever for Chicago.

December 1998: 34.7º/1.0" http://www.crh.noaa....RD/orddec98.txt

January 1999: 22.6º/29.6" http://www.crh.noaa....RD/ordjan99.txt

February 1999: 34.0º/1.9" http://www.crh.noaa....RD/ordfeb99.txt

Hell if it will be staying warm then bring on the blowtorch into Spring, I love severe weather.

I do too. I know a snowstorm or two are still in the offering and I'll take them.

But noticed a post on the main forum a few days ago about the postive feedback that is likely to occur if such a large area of North America remains without snowcover. As you know most of the CONUS and eastern & southern Canada lack any significant snow depth (nothing even close to normal). By end of February if this continues it would likely lead to positive feedback into Spring.

I could definitely see that with warmer ground & lakes it would more likely lead to at least a warmer than normal March & April. The ground frost is not nearly a deep as it should be for this time of year. The Great Lake temps are already well above normal for this time of year.

The talk on here of a cold spring maybe melting away if these February temps remain above normal due to this positive feedback.

Of course we all know there are always other factors that could override this feedback but at this point I hope those factors don't come about.

I believe you...Just the other day my wife and I were pulling in our driveway and thought the grass looked greener. it really is NOT that surprising to see the grass doing this the way the winter has been. There are even reports of Cherries budding and about to open in D.C.!!!!!
