Just wanted to address QVectorman's comment from the now locked thread,

Lack of many knowledgeable mets posting in our forum is the cause, not the effect, of substandard LR discussion.

I'd be nice if he were part of the solution rather than engaging in drive by smears of the subforum.

i was going to add to this, but hooiser sumed it up in the last post in the locked thread.

I agree he has an eccentric way of posting. But he mentioned on his Facebook page his dismay at the locked thread. Instead of locking it you should have just asked him to please explain his thoughts because he was trying to start a pattern change thread. Instead you treated him like a weenie and basically insulted him. As I said they have a perfectly great long range thread in the northeast forum and their mods are not locking it. He is retired and he is not forum savvy. You should cut him some slack. He isn't some punk college met student know it all that has nothing better to do in life than jump from forum to forum and accu weather forums and knows all the quote un quote unwritten rules of forums

I will preface this as saying Mr. Deedler is a welcome contributor to the forum. His knowledge and expertise is without question an asset to the Lakes/OV forum. We should only be as lucky as to have him posting here on AmericanWeather. I wish there were more like him willing to do so. What few mets we have interacting is a great thing.

That being said, the idea you present that his thread was intended to be a pattern change idea is a little hard for me to believe. I may be dense, and just a dumb weenie in your terms, but I don't see anything other than posting about what the GFS was showing for a storm 288 hours out. Now if it was to stoke conversation about the possibility of the future pattern being "kind" to storms such as that...well it flew over my head. I've been doing this weather forum thing for a long time, and I think I have a good grasp of what is welcomed and what is not. If a "run of the mill" member had started that thread in those exact terms, it would have been met with scorn. Again, maybe I'm missing the intent...but I don't think I am. It is of no fault of Mr. Deedler's that he may not know the "code of conduct"...but it's been that way for the longest time. Maybe the exact presentation wasn't clear enough. Nevertheless, it shouldn't be a carte blanche thing for anyone though, red tag or not. Nobody thinks he's a punk college student or anything. That's silly.

We're a community of weather lovers... weenies, hobbyists, degreed meteorologists, etc. that all share a common trait...the love of weather. If you don't feel we're worthy of your involvement, than so be it. Nobody is perfect here. If the New England forum is indeed better, than by all means spend your time there. I myself read and learn quite a bit from the great mets such as Will and CoastalWx. But the majority are here (in this forum) to learn about weather and why it does what it does...despite the few bad apples that are present.

This sums up my thoughts pretty closely, I mean lets be real here too. This region isn't filled with red taggers, hell I think the only one that truly posts with any sort of regularity is myself and lord knows I'm not the most knowledgeable met around, so to treat Bill's thread as if a weenie had posted it was a bit much and I have stated as such. Clarification would have been the better motive instead of cutting and locking the thread off. Honestly though the way this region has acted from both sides of the fence this winter I can't imagine a red tagger wanting to offer up expertise only to get it buried by weenie posts and lol posts. Flame this all you want but we are better than this as a region and I have stated as such several times this winter only to have it be ignored.

One more thing, let me go to bat for Ryan here. His intention wasn't to slap Mr. Deedler on the wrist for starting the thread. Really it was to be consistent with the forum "protocol". Again, as it read...it was simply a post about the 288 hour GFS. I know that a PM was sent explaining the situation, so hopefully everything is cool with all parties.

Anyways, a few flakes falling here right now. I'm on vacation and the beer tastes great. Good times.

do you want him in here or not? That means you have to cut him some slack otherwise you can hang around in here with your weenie friend and none of us mets will bother to waste our time posting for you guys

Quite frankly your attitude is something less than to be desired. This isn't a red tag is better than everyone else kind of place to me. Everyone can coexist in a friendly and productive manner. Of course maybe I'm wrong. And if I am, so be it. But us "weenies" don't have to be talked down to...it's rather tacky to me. Still, as stated by many, his presence (and expertise and knowledge) is welcome and appreciated very much.

Yes I agree that tone isn't what is needed here either.

Will you people shut the f**k up and get back to talking about the weather? For the love of everything good and holy in this world and in the worlds beyond, I am sick and tired of this sh!t. We have a Winter Complaint thread (great idea), so maybe we need a Poster Complaint thread where everyone can b!tch at each other and complain about everyone else's sorry posts. Yes, I'm adding to the non-weather post list here, but I've been coming to these forums for years (back to the EasternWx days), I've learned more reading these threads than I ever thought I would, but this winter has brought about the sorriest bunch of worthless posts I have ever seen. Blah, blah, blah, what is the use of this anymore? I come here to learn, not to listen to a bunch of childish rangle, the likes of which I haven't experienced since the days of Prodigy listening to a bunch of middle schoolers battle each other over which Star Trek captain was better and who got to touch b00b first. For crying out loud.

I wish that I could sometimes add more than I do.... and quite frankly I wish I knew more about things like the MJO, it wasn't as emphasized when I was in school as it likely is now. But its the same way with a lot of things, as more research is done more things become known, and incorporated into the teachings of the profession. I apologize to all here that I sometimes don't go in depth as I probably could.

As to the other issues, we have a good group of posters- red taggers and regulars that know a lot more than most lay people when it comes to meteorology. I like everyone's contributions to our region and discussions. Lets just remember to be respectful to everyone and treat everyone with some dignity. Its easy to let emotions get the best of you, just gotta know when to step back for a minute.

As for the weather, I still like the idea of a storm out around the 18th seems to be perfect timing with the pattern trying to re-align and the MJO and what not. Things are looking up for our region and much of the Midwest/Ohio Valley I think.

I agree with all of this especially the bolded part which I had mentioned in the 2nd locked thread.

no need to apologize.

folks like you, csnavywx and oceanstwx (and others) stop in and add what you can/when you can. being able to to have at least some sort of discussion with mets is part of the reason this board better than any other.

I apologize for the tone but its is getting a little frustrating when people don't want to cut him some slack. and at the same time complain about the quality of posters. My apologies though

Listen, I'm sure you have a lot to add to this forum. I wish you felt different and would involve yourself/start threads (ideas)...along with any other meteorologist. There's a segment of the population that isn't fit to talk about such things though. It's like that in every sub-forum. It is what it is. I don't really think anyone is not cutting Mr. Deedler any slack per se. I can only say it one more time, his contributions are very much appreciated. As are yours if you choose. But that's your call. That being said, I've said my peace...time to move on.

Pixie dust falling here...but a car topper nonetheless. February shutout averted. :bike:

Pixie dust or nor my school is on a two hour delay! Woo Hoo! (Now if I just didn't have to get up and update our school status on the districts website and send out the twitter and Fb messages it would be perfect.)

Indy AFD throws us a bone:

MORE SUBSTANTIAL UPPER LEVEL SYSTEM WILL LIFT INTO THE OHIO VALLEY ON WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY WITH A CHANCE FOR MORE WIDESPREAD PRECIPITATION.

I'd love to put this hypothesis to the test. Re-open Mr. Deedler's thread and let's see if this forum becomes mecca for mets.

You'll excuse me if I have my doubts.

I find these stratus-heavy patterns frustrating. We have been socked in with thick stratus every morning and it frequently last most of the day or all day. At least it looks like we may get into the sun earlier today for a change. :sun:

The models have backed off a bit from the mild/torchish pattern they had been teasing following the late week chill. It would now seem there's at least a chance of something interesting if we can keep some decent cold while also getting some pieces of energy moving out of the west/southwest. Of course we can still get snow well into March, but since I began keeping snow records five years ago our latest 6 inch storm was Feb 17th, 2008. Mid February has very much been the end of our core snow season in recent years, with an average of only 5.6 inches thereafter.
