I don't know if this $78million is a new addition or if the gov't has increased the initial funding. According to one source...a new standardized warning system is in development and could be operational by 2013. Points: Major infrastructure upgrade underway including... The radar network The warning system Aviation/marine/arctic monitoring Data access Lightning network Training/software upgrades Excerpts from the media release... Harper Government Strengthens Canada's Weather and Warning Systems TORONTO, Ont. -- January 20, 2012 -- Today, the Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment, announced that the Harper Government is investing $78.7 million over the next five years to strengthen weather monitoring infrastructure, ensuring Canadians continued access to world-class weather, water and climate monitoring data. ... The infrastructure upgrades will strengthen the Department's core weather monitoring networks including the weather radar network, which is the backbone of Canada's severe weather warnings service. The upgrades will also modernize the monitoring infrastructure and help Environment Canada's weather service keep pace with the rapid evolution of new science and technologies. ... Jim Marusak Posted January 20, 2012 Share Posted January 20, 2012 so they're going dual pol all across? that'll be nice. now if the public and non-ec mets could get full-range base and sr velocitiy (240km) data displayed from them, not just the 120km base velocity from the weather underground and the cappi plots from their main site, that would take them to the next level. There is still hope that they will allow public access to full radar products... and wunderground seems like the first step to this. Hopefully, this will help improve forecasting here as well, with more data coming from Canada and maybe better modeling coming out of them too.
