Measured 3.2" after shoveling...but there was a 4.1" in Shrewsbury...I always seem to come in low for snow amounts. Mablizzard, was that your total? It was the highest total within 20 miles so I feel it may have been high...but going with the 3.2" total I have a nice 3.5-5.5" snowpack. Looks like winter.

10.4" for MET winter

19.6" for the season including OCT.

There actually was good VVs yesterday when I looked along the south coast, but I think lift was actually just modest in this..it was just a great combo of getting it into the DGZ and it went perfect. I think on a mesoscale feature, the lift was probably strong. Dare I say...Feb 6 2003 like. Speed shear type frontogenesis and deformation.

Yeah that's it. I talked to a met friend down near the shoreline and he said that what was amazing was that the snow growth still sucked but the lift must have been so strong 850-700mb it was able to deliver without great dendritic growth.

Imagine if you were a touch colder around 700 or the frontogenesis was more pronounced upstairs more like 650 or 600mb? Seems like it remained pretty low.... I think given the duration of that band you may have been able to really rip better rates.

I wonder if the fact the mesoscale feature was relatively shallow with the best frontogenesis through BL up to 750mb.... you were able to just nail the same places over and over. Had the frontogenesis been more spread through the atmosphere say up to 600mb it would have been a bit more transient as the mid level features moved? Just throwing out some ideas here....

What a beautiful night just woke up from a 2 hour nap ready for a night of fire pit festivities and sledding, the landscape is changed full of life and renewal.

As soon as you got rid of all that Spring/torch bs from your sig you were rewarded. Don't revert back when you lose some snow, more will be delivered if you keep the faith. Have fun tonight. One more round on the toboggans after dinner then I'm passing out, What a day of Winter fun. The only bad thing about Winter is one day it has to end.

Weren't you worried like a week ago that all the New England ski areas would have to close down and snow would be lost to the summits during the thaw? Now you don't think it'll leave the 30s in CT. I like how this is trending.

It's amazing how quickly they change their tune when they see a little white.lol

And probably would have covered a broader area. It sounded like snow growth was decent..well at least from what Messenger mentioned. But there could have been maybe some embedded deeper lift that shot into the DGZ more.

I think everything was sheared out more to the ENE, so the band developed and was able to spread ENE based on forcing/frontogenesis...but as the 850 low (or somewhere around that level) approached..it tightned up the thermal gradient just enough over the same area to actually intensify it. Then finally after it passed by, it pivoted se.

THis pow will be wiped clean monday-thur, piles will remain...........Feb looks pretty damn good, my 6 weeks of -2.5 30-65 for all sne might work out.......and I am happy the torch is muted.

My kids were so happy today sledding, beautiful scene out there tonight

Yeah there was definitely some lift in the DGZ in the superband but it wasn't epic 3"+ hour dendrite kind of stuff. Given the reflectively we had a large number of relatively small flakes.

Yup you wound up tightening the gradient through frontogenesis and created relatively powefuly circulation with lift being aided by synoptic scale ascent thanks to jet streak to the north and a localized burst of warm advection along that relatively tight thermal gradient on the south coast. That frontogenesis overperformed, was in a relatively narrow and shallow layer, and the atmosphere was cold enough around 800/750mb to capitalize on it.

Interesting stuff for sure.

Cool Joe. It's so much fun having being outside with your kids in the snow. Uproarious laughter and big smiles. Not to mention that at about 7:30 or so, after a full day in the cold, snowy air, they pass out leaving the parents to carry on the party.lol

It was here, but for a short duration, under an hour when we had the 30-35dbz overhead in a narrow band. We flipped to a totally different type of flake after that period and the snow rate fell to the normal inch an hour or so.

Case in point for Scott, I just measured a cleared area, 1/2" in the last 45 minutes or so. The snowpack is 8.5". We're losing pack to compression and compaction.

Messenger's private band... On and on and on, this is just your day!

Spent a couple hours sledding with my daughter. Set up my usual run from the front door down the front steps and down our front yard. If all breaks right you can end up across the street in the neighbors yard. About 100yds in all. Fun times. Made some snow angels as well.

Awesome

this event def reminded me of that one , one of my favorite snow events of all time .. that band from ORH to BOS south and east had to be 2"-3" / hr for awhile and was completely unexpected ( i think the NWS forecast that morning was still 2-4 for ORH )

nope not my total , I didnt measure but I would estimate about 3" fell (give or take a couple tenths)

It's a couple kids from North Haven that report these obsurd totals. I said I was suspicious of the measurement on Twitter and I got like 20 messages and pictures trying to prove it lol.

You can clearly see the n/s gradient here in Tolland Cty:

..TOLLAND COUNTY...
  ROCKVILLE 4.0 405 PM 1/21 HAM RADIO
  COVENTRY 3.8 417 PM 1/21 HAM RADIO
  TOLLAND 3.0 1208 PM 1/21 HAM RADIO
  STAFFORD SPRINGS 2.7 511 PM 1/21 SPOTTER
  STAFFORDVILLE 2.3 317 PM 1/21 SPOTTER

Staffordville is the northern most location followed by me (Stafford Springs), Tolland, Coventry and Rockville.

Congrats to those with the double digits!
