For comparison, 18z NAM sounding for 0z at IAD had:

825mb -0.5C

800mb -0.4C

775mb -3C

18Z GFS had:

850mb -1.3C

800mb -1.5C

Looks a bit colder than either in reality. Below that level, NAM looks like a pretty decent match.

What is it with the bubble that develops around the city during a lot of winter storms? I can't count the number of times that ive seen it.

On the radar? That's an artefact. The radar beam is seeing virga and the clouds aloft at a distance because the beam finally intersects them at that range. The beam is not parallel to the ground, but starts at a low angle (e.g., 0.5deg) and then scans progressively higher angles. Above the radar is the "cone of silence". There could very well be virga and there are certainly clouds above our area, just the radar can't see them.

Thanks for the explanation!

Radar looks decent to the SW of here. Maybe some flakes knock on the front door here soon in LoCo

The intresting thing about that is that the precip is advancing towards the radar. GR2AE says the virga "deck" is around 1000ft and "falling". Probably snowing on the blue ridge pkway right now.

I wouldnt be surprised JT if it is. Get out there at 1, 2, 3000 feet and i bet it is coming down.

they need to put webcams up so it can be used for night viewing as well.

if you recall the Big Meadows ob I posted earlier today, S and SW of DCA never got into the arctic air

I know this is no comparison, but PDII EZF had a ton of sleet after a relatively few hours of snow+

Yep. We in Woodbridge had about 8-10 inches of snow, then sleet for the next 18 hrs or so, Piled another 5 inches of dreadfull iceballs at 14 degrees during the event. It was so frustrating.

Finally down below 30. Sitting at 29.6, Was at 30.8 about an hour ago, so I guess that's better news.
