A bit surprised but DC/DCA was kind of "ground zero" for the event. We got in the best bands for the most part.

yeah we definitely got a few nice thumps/. and we're only like 6" below normal now! coldest (tied) high of the year too.

I'll probably do a post on futility records. We got through the 1st 2. I think there are a couple in the 2-3" range. Once we get to the 5-8" range there are a lot more examples which is why we might just end up in that range :(.

It might be. Severn is not to far and they also got 0.40.

SEVERN 0.4 743 AM 1/21 TRAINED SPOTTER

Problem is, this happened:

KBWI 210554Z 08005KT 3/4SM R10/6000VP6000FT -SN BR VV010 M03/M04 A3017 RMK AO2 SLP217 SNINCR 1/1 4/001 P0007 60007 T10331044 10000 21033 58026

SNINCR 1/1 indicates at least one new inch of snow in the last hour, with an inch of snow on the ground. The 4/001 indicates at least 0.5" of snow on the ground (which also got reported in the 12z and 18z reports).

On top of that, they got 0.17" of water equivalent from just snow. There's no way they only got 0.4".

EDIT:

All of the reports around BWI that were under an inch were reported between 7-10am... plenty of time for compaction and interference with sleet/freezing rain to lower the totals.

... granted, all the other reports made in that area were in that timeframe as well.

The evidence seems irrefutable to me unless the METAR totally crapped the bed... given all the other observations in the area I would say that the METAR is correct.

FYI. 1943-44 was adjusted up for some reason I think the records from when they transitioned locations might not have been great.

This might be the 1st event they have under recorded in years.

Ahh I guess they oficially changed them. Jason forwarded an email about that from LWX. Its like a 4 or 5 season period they were using monthly and seasonal from the wrong location. I'll dig it up.
