bluewave
I found 14 cases when NYC picked up 3 inch or greater snows during La Nina years in February since 1950. All that we needed during those years was to have at least some blocking in either the EPO, AO, or even PNA regions. While most of the cases had some blocking near the Davis Strait or Alaska, in 2008 we got by with just some blocking in the PNA region. I left out a year like 1996 due to the epic nature of that winter. Here are the dates that I used: 2-14-50 2-1-51 2-2-55 2-1-57 2-19-72 2-23-72 2-8-74 2-2-85 2-5-85 2-18-00 2-5-01 2-22-01 2-22-08 2-3-09 Main composite 2/22/08 +PNA special

bluewave
a few others... 2/6-7/1972 had a 4-5" snowfall... 2/12/1975 had an 8" snowfall... 2/5-6/1976 4"... 1963 had a 2.5 incher around the 19th... 1968 had a 6" on 2/29-3/1... Thanks for adding those. 2/06 needs to be on this list. I left off 2006 because the Nina was so weak and that December was colder than typical Nina years like this one. But with that type of switch to February 06 blocking anything is possible.
uncle W
the La Nina winters that started out warm but ended cold in February averaged 11.1" of snow...If this February is warm then it won't matter...I think February will end up the coldest month on average...I looked at 26 of the strongest mei la nina February's and these are the five... year.....mei.....pna.....ao.....nao.....ave temp...snowfall...big snow" 1950..-1.148..-1.04...0.627..0.40.......31.6.......8.5"...3.8" 1972..-0.406..-1.48..-0.195..0.32.......31.4.....17.8"...5.7" 1974..-1.797..-0.90..-0.489.-0.14.......31.7.......9.4"...6.0" 1975..-0.598..-0.16...0.194.-0.62.......35.8.....10.6"...7.8" 2008..-1.389...0.50...0.938..0.73.......35.8.......9.0"...6.0" 1950 had a cold February despite having a -pna and +ao/nao...only 2008 had a positive pna...only seven out of the 26 had a positive pna...I think the ao/nao won't be as positive as it has been the last three months...If we are going to get any significant snow it will fall in February... JBG
You left off last year's President's Day (granted it was wimpy compared to Boxing Day and the January storms) and February 7, (or so) 1967.
