on_wx
Heck, this severe weather episode has got me hungry for storms. That is why I hope the deep western/plains trough idea works out rather than the zonal boredom to end January. No kidding... especially watching that line develop 80 miles east of here producing 60-70mph winds in western New York. So close. Ugh.

Chicago Storm
Tornado or funnel cloud over Louisville today? Tornado. Condensation funnel extended below the tree line, which at that relatively short distance away from where the video is taken, is almost a given there was a circulation at the surface. Hoosier
Something kinda interesting...between 1950-2011, there were 9 years that had tornadoes in Indiana in January. Every one of those winters was a La Nina.
Chicago Storm
I know its East of the GLOV but those severe warnings in W NY state are for winds in excess of 70 MPH, pretty impressive for January. It's not surprising we saw this across OH/NY/PA. Wind at 925mb of 50kts+ and 60-70kts+ at 850mb...The low topped showers/storms were clearly able to tap some of this. On top of that you had a strong 2hr pressure rise/fall couplet of +/- 6mb.

The more surprising part was the lack of a watch or slight risk for that area.

I don't have anything concrete to back this up but it seems like these winter events tend to sneak up on the SPC especially when they occur at more northern latitudes. SouthernNJ
Very dangerous storms just east of, and southwest of Louisville. A little surprising that a Convective Watch wasn't issued. They certainly had a chance to issue one, even a meso discussion said that one was possible. There were active TOR and SVR's at the time of the discussion and damage being reported in numerous areas with no signs of weakening. Still, they held back. Funny that the only area with just isolated severe reports today was the only area with a SLIGHT RISK issued as opposed to a SEE TEXT.

Yes I have noticed this too. I think its a hesitance to agree that dynamics can over compensate for a lacking of instability, case in point today. I wonder how it all panned out Ontario-side. Environment Canada issued a wind warning ahead of the cold front from Toronto to Niagara Falls. Once the line reached Buffalo the NWS went severe thunderstorm warning and EC canceled the wind warning. Haven't heard of any reports this side of the border. Not to say something didn't happen, though. We just don't have public storm report data and the news doesn't necessarily keep up with the weather. Every one of those winters was a La Nina. Have there been any significant January tornadoes in Indiana or have they all been generally weak? I'm looking through the Ontario hazards info right now to see if we've had any Jan activity....which there hasn't been. Only off-season tornado in ON was an F2 in Dec 1946. A little over a quarter of the Jan tornadoes were rated F2 or greater. One of the more notable ones was an F4 that moved out of Illinois on January 7, 1989.
