2012 Winter Banter Thread #2

True, but I think the main push isn't for a full clamp down as much as reigning it in some. We all make some weenie/banterish posts from time to time, but to me (and others) it's at the point where some increased effort needs to be taken with moderating posts.

Just because a board (or anything) is successful doesn't mean it can't get better.

As it stands at least as far as I can see...when you say "to me(and others) it's you, mapgirl h20 and trixie....at least you guys are the most vocal

I think the problem in my opinion is that expectations have increased even in the face of evidence to suggest otherwise...a month ago we were happy to try and root on a 1" event because we just wanted snow...expectations were reasonable, we knew we were fighting a bad pattern and discussion was smaller and higher quality....now the nature of the discussion has changed...it is bigger...quality is worse,...but most impotantly there is a complete lack of context....the discussion lacks rationality even in light of the past 2 events and people are ignorantly rooting on a KU that has a 2% chance of happening instead of looking at things with any objectivity....it has become less fun and more dumb which is why I am trying to take a breather...

i understand and take your commentary much more seriously of course. i left the board for 3 days like two weeks ago because i could not stand the general discussion at that point... getting ridiculed for something that ended up basically correct. i dunno.. the "mood" of this place swings too much for me to personally get how it's supposed to be perfectly run. going back to that same period a while back i remember plenty of "you don't need to always tell us it's not going to happen" stuff.

if i had to think up "terrible weenies" who are annoying above all else i could probably only come up with like 1 or 2. maybe it's a mistake that they are still here... i dunno. i err on the side that pretty much everyone makes crappy posts at times. even those who complain about the crappy posts.

Are you still upset you aren't an admin yet?

Amen.

As someone who only posts regularly on 2 message boards, AmWx and one that is HIGHLY (Soup Nazi level) moderated, being on AmWx is like a breath of fresh air. If we're not in storm mode, than people need to lighten up.

Also...Happy Birthday, Ian!

That episode was a rerun just this week

They seem to be the only ones with problems versus the 200 or so regulars we have in this subforum, that in itself should be telling to you. For some reason they think (and want) to be Admins here.

thx nw balt and wxusaf.. perhaps i shuold take the afternoon off. ;)

Not a bad idea. Thursday afternoons are my favorite work afternoon of the week because if we get through today, then we've essentially made it through the week. Too bad Mt. Washington Tavern burned down because Thursday HH included free* oysters.

*Of course you end up over-tipping, but still pretty nice to see a pile of arsters you're not really paying for!

I was just filling in the gaps you forgot to fill in yourself.

Your words, not mine.

it's pretty telling how being a jackass is your top priority today. considering you're about half a step above a weenie yourself.. might want to rethink your strategy here.

Yes, many of us enjoy the casualness that goes on in the main threads. I don't post much as I'm not a forecaster, but I would rather it be jovial and educational than serious, boring, and educational.

The bolded part is what I have the hardest time understanding. You are an admin... if you can't stand it, why not try to moderate it and get it more under control? Is taking a hiatus a better choice over using you moderating privileges?

Also, happy birthday! I'm sorry for giving you this crap to deal with, but they are my honest thoughts and it seems odd to me that you and some other moderators on this forum (not just the Mid-Atlantic) are so reluctant to act when the decision to act seems fairly straightforward.

I pretty much agree with this post...a month ago when the discussion was pissing you off it wasnt really bothering me....a lot of factors are at play....I'm not complaining though..I just need a breather...I only came back to post the euro QPF after hour 54 and got sucked back in ;)

we are all frustrated with this winter....But I don't think looking for a home run to save winter is a productive collective exercise.....maybe one of these events between now and next Wednesday will give us a minor event...maybe not, but I prefer to just take it as it comes...I like optimism as long as there is context....I feel like context has become increasingly lacking to the point where your complaints from a few weeks back are now much more warranted....

well it could be that people were looking for 2" instead of a dusting back then and now they're holding on to some hope of a MECS when we're more likely to get 1". i do wish some people would learn eventually.. they seem like they are capable but it never quite happens.

why? because part of it was between another admin and i figured it was better to cool off than to have some big board brawl over fake precipitation. we don't just let the place run itself totally.. we do things when we feel it's necessary. perhaps we don't always do it quick enough.

Really? that is a bit surprising...what department?

It's just what Hopkins does. Don't ask me why. In the Arts and Sciences college, all undergrad degrees are BAs and grads are MAs. Ironically, the School of Engineering gives BSs and MSs :axe:

Are you getting your PhD?

Yes. And just was notified that my first paper was accepted for publication! So I'm in a good mood today :)

Being capable and being rational when it comes to snow are two totally different things on this board.

From an objective point of view, I feel like I've seen him take some pretty solid punches this year that have little to do with admin duties.

I think Ian and Matt should take the afternoon off and head down to OEG for a beer and fried oyster stew.

Interesting, I work with some folks in the School of Engineering and I wondered if they were the same.

Congrats, that's a pretty awesome feeling! Where you doing your PhD?

This is a hobby and to the extent it isn't enjoyable I think breaks are good...I'm kind of beyond the point iof making suggestions,.THe board is what it is...It is a good board....sometimes I just need a break.....

I could see where you are coming from, if i knew half as much as you knew i would need breaks as well from the board from time to time. But since i am a weenie like many here, the stuff that bothers you does not bother me.

Indeed it is. At Hopkins...the MA was my "congrats on finishing quals" reward.
