why do they make it so hard to find, if I had a dollar for every person I know who have asked me where do you find the storm total map I would be a rich man....Mt Holly needs to do something about that and clearly label it on the side panel

There is a link for the snow/ice total maps right on the homepage, above the watch/warning/advisory map with all the other links. It is in the same place where it was previously.

this is gfs, the nam has 3-6 for the whole region from del river west and i95 west

Thanks Tom. I just had the dog our for a walk and it sure is cold out. I have a hard time believing anything other then snow or sleet falls across a good chunk of the area. If pure liquid falls at some point, it will ice up very fast.

I'm thinking if it ices up just enough it could make for some great sledding though, although the weenie in me says I want all snow!

Mike - the snow map links could be improved. Maybe just put the words "snow map" under the icon now labelled "winter weather" - it's much more descriptive. Or, there is room for an icon/map in the space next to the main CWA map.

Another question: why all caps for the AFDs? In the internet world, caps usually mean shouting and are hard to read. Just curious if it's a conscious decision or just habit.

Last question: as far as I can tell, the AFD and snowfall map links are "dynamic" links that when posted to a message board or included in an email (I link to NWS stuff a lot) only point to the current version, such that once the link on the NWS page is updated, the "old" link I posted/sent out no longer points to the "old" information, but to updated information - is there any way to have the link retain its historical significance (i.e., to still point to the info/graphic originally targeted)? Thanks, in advance...

The link pops up on the homepage when a storm total snow/ice map is generated and sent. This link is placed in the links section which is above the map. The icon as you mentioned also takes you to the storm total maps, and this is new this season. It was probably labeled the way it is as there is a snow and also an ice storm total map. I do not know much about the IT side, however I do know there are size/space limits and where things can be placed on the homepages. There is a team looking into updating and improving the NWS homepages, but I am not exactly sure where that stands as of now.

This goes back many, many, many years (I believe during the teletype time). Not exactly sure why the NWS products are still in all caps but there has been some testing of regular text in other regions of the NWS. I must say though, having it in all caps allows most people to type things faster. Getting rid of the all caps would have to come basically from headquarters.

I am not exactly sure about this as some of the graphics do not have previous version options (some graphics are posted as needed). Others like the AFD have several versions that can be found under the appropriate link, but these are more 'drynamic' because of the previous versions being available. There are web sites out there where previous products (at least text) can always be obtained. You can always save the text product or graphic and store it on your own computer/device.

Mike - thanks very much for the prompt and informative replies; the one I'm most interested in is the links - I know I can always save a screen shot/PDF, but man, it would be so much more convenient if the link just retained its time relevance.

Now get back to work and make it snow. :>)
