Chicago Storm

Recommended Posts

When I lived in Ann Arbor for 4 years, I could never believe the totals that were reported "unofficially" at the coop or whatever station they were using. Yes, it's definitely a tad snowier spot in southeast Michigan but seems the totals were always inflated.

Maybe I'm a more conservative snow measurer, but there were often times that totals would come in double than what I could ever find. It would baffle me that Ann Arbor would report a 6" total, yet I measured 3" and numerous times I'd measure maybe an inch or an inch and a half while the "unofficial" total was 2 to 3 inches.

I think in places in the Midwest it's quite common for two very close places to end up with wildly different seasonal totals just on that small margin of error. Especially in the lakes where you can easily have 30+ days of measurable snow, a site that reports just 0.6" more for each event, while not visibly noticeable or appear out of whack on a PNS now has a whopping 18" more for a seasonal total.

Interesting. I does seem pretty high. I'll keep an eye on it.

For those who don't regularly check the main Weather Forecasting and Discussion forum, there's some interesting talk going on in the Medium Range Winter Discussion thread...including talk about a flip to a colder patter looking more and more likely for Feb.

I have noticed living in Hills between AA to Lapeer that snow amounts can vary within a couple miles. Some spots always seem to get more out of storms (both snow & T-storm wise). There could be something wrong the reporting spot or it just may be one of those spots that just does better. I would not be surprised either way.

I took this earlier in the month, but just happened to upload it today. Pretty cool buckling of snow off a roof, which ironically has a 30 year old rusted sign below it about buckling up.

Nice!

Temps slowly leaking a little at a time here. Down to 35 now. Looks like we'll have rain to start with shortly after midnight, then a period of freezing rain/sleet, and then some light snow/flurries tomorrow.

53/53 with a thundershower here at 6AM. Had a T-shower at 5 AM and a T-storm at about 1:30. We could pick up an inch and a half of precip by the time this is over.

I know that this not unheard of for Jan., but it sure seems like an April/May morning out there! And to think, I had 3 inches of snow on the ground 2 days ago. :frostymelt: :frostymelt: :raining:

EDIT: .88" as of 6:30 AM and still raining.

Woke up to lightening and muffled, rolling thunder this morning.... thought I was dreaming.

I still like the sound of the HWO. At least it will look and feel Winter.

RAIN AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS WILL PERSIST INTO TUESDAY MORNING.

THE RAIN WILL CHANGE OVER TO SNOW FROM WEST TO EAST DURING THE

AFTERNOON. THE RAINFALL COULD BE LOCALLY HEAVY WITH ANY

THUNDERSTORMS. LIGHT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE POSSIBLE TONIGHT.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY

SEVERAL CHANCES FOR SNOW WILL EXIST THROUGH THE PERIOD WITH LIGHT

ACCUMULATIONS POSSIBLE.

LAF gone wild...58 at 1 AM

Looks like LAF managed to peg 59 in between obs.

The wunderground page shows 58 as being the record high for LAF... not sure where they get the data, but...

http://www.wundergro...eq_statename=NA

EDIT: some further digging in the NOWdata shows the record for today is 59. So looks like we tied the record (or set? not sure how often that data updates).

Wunderground gets wonky, and will miss the "top of the hour" METARS sometimes.

59º indeed a tie of the record at LAF (1996). But there is a lot of missing data for the airport...so it's a take it FWIW. Also a daily precipitation record set with the 1.45"...shattering the old one of 0.56" in 1988. Again though, lots of missing data.

WL COOP records are consistent since 1901, outside five years in the late 40's/early 50's. Record high for today is 62º in 1990 and precip record is...0.98" in 2012. Heh, didn't realize they update it so fast on the NOWdata page.
