In the January 12-23 period...yes I'm skipping ahead a few days...10.9" of snow (3 separate events each producing at least 3") and two possible "severe/strong" weather events (last early Tues morning hail/thunderstorms already in the books) in MBY. Not too shabby.

I suppose my native roots are showing in this thread. Cold makes me crazy.

Nothing's wrong with that at all, assuming you're attentive of the fact that the oven door is open.

Some people here apparently haven't spoken with their parent or grandparents as of late. That's how it used to be done when they wanted to heat a house before the space heaters and central heating, and I know people who still do this. It also does heat up your home faster.

It's never been a northern or southern thing, probably more so a generational thing.

I wasn't even keeping the door open, just heating it up to 500 °F and then shutting it off, and then opening it up for 10 minutes. It heated the apartment 5 °F in an hour. Glad to hear it's not unheard of.

Weather over the next 2 days sounds interesting. Freezing rain and then snow.

345 PM CST SAT JAN 21 2012

...POSSIBLE ICING CONDITIONS ON SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT...

WARM AIR SURGING NORTHWARD AHEAD OF DEVELOPING LOW PRESSURE IN THE

PLAINS WILL PUSH INTO SOUTHERN WISCONSIN SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT.

TEMPERATURES ABOVE THE SURFACE WILL WARM TO ABOVE FREEZING...AND

REMAIN ABOVE FREEZING UNTIL LATER SUNDAY NIGHT.

HOWEVER TEMPERATURES RIGHT AT THE SURFACE ARE EXPECTED TO CLIMB TO

NEAR OR SLIGHTLY ABOVE FREEZING ON SUNDAY. AT THE SAME

TIME...INCREASING MOISTURE AHEAD OF THIS LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MAY

TRIGGER AREAS OF DRIZZLE AND FREEZING DRIZZLE SUNDAY AFTERNOON.

EVEN THOUGH ANY PRECIPITATION THAT FALLS WOULD BE LIGHT...ENOUGH

FREEZING DRIZZLE MAY OCCUR TO CAUSE SLIPPERY CONDITIONS TO

REDEVELOP.

AS THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVES FROM THE CENTRAL PLAINS ACROSS

SOUTHERN WISCONSIN LATE SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY MORNING...MORE

WIDESPREAD PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED. MAINLY RAIN IS ANTICIPATED

BY LAKE MICHIGAN...HOWEVER TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN AROUND

FREEZING FARTHER INLAND. THIS WILL INCREASE THE LIKELIHOOD FOR A

PERIOD OF LIGHT FREEZING RAIN SUNDAY NIGHT.

THE RAIN AND FREEZING RAIN WILL BECOME MIXED WITH OR CHANGE OVER

TO LIGHT SNOW BEFORE ENDING ON MONDAY. SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW IS

EXPECTED OVER PARTS OF SOUTH CENTRAL WISCONSIN BY LATER MONDAY.

THE LIGHT FREEZING RAIN AND DRIZZLE MAY CAUSE HAZARDOUS TRAVEL

CONDITIONS TO RETURN LATER SUNDAY. ALL TRAVELERS WILL WANT TO STAY

ABREAST OF THE LATEST FORECASTS AND STATEMENTS ON THE POTENTIAL

RETURN OF WINTRY CONDITIONS TO SOUTHERN WISCONSIN.

If you are running the oven, put a pork roast in there. Add some sauerkraut and some potatoes... Let it cook for a few hours until it falls apart.

I cook all the time in winter...i figure it adds some heat to the house and fills my belly :)

UP to 20F now. downright mild out there from this morning.

Noticed Rapid City was up near 60F this afternoon, from a morning low in the single digits. Denver was in the low 60Fs.

lol, terrible advice from Powerball.

Seriously, a simple google search shows heating your place with a gas oven is dumb.

Oh please. I didn't come here to debate fire hazards. Space heaters are no safer or more dangerous than open ovens IF LEFT UNATTENDED.

But I'm glad to hear this technique is working out for your turtlehurricane. Judging from the fact you're posting here now, I highly doubt anything bad has happened in your apartment, like some keep baselessly overemphasizing

In any event, back to the weather, I probably won't post anymore until February, or when a decent storm is actually in the offing. I'm glad this  January (although better than December) will be ending here. Might as well go 3 for 3 in terms of our recent string of record snowiest Februaries.

15 degrees in an hour? Wow, That's nuts.

You want nuts? Take a look at this.. Was mentioned on Skilling's blog a little while ago as well..

Spearfish SD holds the world record for the fastest temperature change. On January 22, 1943 at about 7:30 a.m. MST, the temperature in Spearfish was -4°F (-20°C). The Chinook wind picked up speed rapidly, and two minutes later (7:32 a.m.) the temperature was +45°F (+7°C) above zero. The 49°F (27°C) rise in two minutes set a world record that still holds. By 9:00 a.m., the temperature had risen to 54°F (12°C). Suddenly, the chinook died down and the temperature tumbled back to -4°F (-20°C). The 58°F (32°C) drop took only 27 minutes.[10][11]

That's something! Nice find. Temperature has been bouncing all over the place tonight. Was 9°, then up to the low 20s, now it's back down to 18° at the house.

Spent a little time today looking at the snowflakes that fell yesterday.

Well, this winter has been much warmer than normal for us in the Gl/OV. However, a quick look at my records indicate that it is playing out as a typical, predicted, second year nina pattern. This includes lots of temperature swings, which we are experiencing on a weekly basis.

As far as snowfall, MBY is ancedotal evidence of this pattern. Although my ~21" is slightly above normal, I have only had 1" or more snow cover on 13 days, with the longest stretch of 1" snowcover being 4 days. This has got to be driving Josh nuts, as it probably as bad or worse in the Detroit area. He needs to change his username to michsnowcoverfreak. lol

Yep....today is day #10 of 1"+ snowcover (although my 13.3" snowfall is below normal to date). This is coming after last winter seeing 81 days with 1"+ snowcover (60 of those days were 5"+, many 10"+ too) and 69.4" of snow. I dont expect to see constant snowcover from Nov thru Mar, its not my climo...but this year has been cruel punishment. Although you are above normal to date, you should consider yourself extremely lucky. You are one of a few specks of + departures in a nationwide sea of snow deficits!

Dreading tomorrow, but this morning is my favorite kind of winter day (when its not snowing of course). White blanket of snow and gray skies!
