Absolute Humidity
I bet one day we'll see a KU that gives us all 30"+, maybe even a monster 3' type storm that would make the Blizzard of 96 look like your ordinary run of the mill snowstorm. It happened, for 9 days in feb 1717. 3 to 5 feet fell between NYC and all of New England.
Absolute Humidity
All we really had was a couple of nickel events. The Jan event with the Oct event. Howeve, the Oct storm was classified an official KU, cat 1 preliminary. So as lame as this winter is, we did have an official KU. http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/snow-and-ice/rsi/nesis

Maybe it'll come again in our lifetimes given the Sun will be very weak ala the Maunder Minimum through 2050.

One could argue that February 2010 COULD have done it. We get everything right that month; we are buried under 60-70" of snow that month alone. My highest was low 80s in the 95/96 winter. I'm convinced that the NYC area will see a winter with widespread 90"+, locallized 100-110" in season, sometime in the next few decades. I know it will, I feel it in my bones. We will get the perfect setup and resulting perfect storm or series of back to back to back Ku,s in this solar min, PDO regime. We just barely missed it in late Feb 2010, if only H85 was 2 degrees colder feb 23 - 25, 2010, 3' + area wide.

That was a season i highly doubt i will ever see again in my lifetime, i live just north of Baltimore and i got 94" that winter. Places within 15 miles of me got over 100". That winter allows me to get through winters like this one without killing someone or becoming JI.

(only a bad February that month did not help), but it will happen again, it might take a long time...

Never seen anything like it. Back to back to back storms for us. Unreal. You guys n & w of B'more got absolutely annihilated. I remember hearing about people stranded on Rt 15 south of Frederick in feet upon feet of snow.

It was unreal after the Feb 6th and Feb 10th back to back snowstorms, there was so much snow in my area they had to hire private contractors from all over the east coast to come and use front loaders and dump trucks to get rid of all the snow or you would have never been able to drive in my area and the whole city would have shut down for weeks. I wish i had taken pics of the clean up efforts, they were amazing to watch.

Since I've moved to NYC (May 2010), I've experienced the warmest spring and summer, ever , the snowiest january, the wettest month, the second wettest year, and the warmest day (back in July when we had 104/84). Oh, and the second snowiest year I think (last year was right?).

And that is like 40 miles south of me, i do not have exact records but if i remember correctly i had about a 55" depth on feb 11th. In an actual fairly big city it is an amazing sight to see. I know. it has been a crazy time to follow weather, that is for sure. It likely has to do with the longwave pattern and how it set up (among other factors, of course0. pazzo83
OK, about SSTs... So I was looking at three buoys relatively near us, one in the entrance to the NY Harbor (44065), one in the LI Sound near Islip (44025), and one 54 nm southeast of Nantucket (44008) So these were the water temps for yesterday, Jan 31 2012: 44065: 46-47 F 44025: 44-46 F 44008: 46-47 F Now, for those same buoys, Jan 31 2011: 44065: 37-38 F 44025: 40-41 F 44008: 42-43 F So the greatest difference was closer to shore, but still water temps are running several degrees higher this year than last. So when, last season, did these buoys drop to the temps they are recording now, in late Jan/early Feb of 2012 (this is when they last saw such a temp until Spring 2011): 44065: Dec 25, 2010, 46 F 44025: Jan 5, 2011, 44 F 44008: Jan 3, 2011, 46 F Now, last year, this is the date it took for each buoy to reach the temps that they are presently recording now... 44065: April 23, water temp hit 46 F 44025: April 9, water temp hit 45 F 44008: April 25, water temp hit 46F Now I realize the coldest water temps are usually Feb into early March, but the lows for 2011 weren't that much lower than what we saw on Jan 31 of that year: 44065: 35 F, Feb 5 44025: 37 F, Feb 15 44008: 40 F, Feb 22 Wonder how this plays out for not only borderline situations by the coast in any possible upcoming storms but also spring time temps (stupid sea breeze).
