no it's not! that's the Yuki No Otani (lit. "Snow Wall") which is part of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route which is around 20 miles, located between Toyama and Nagano Prefectures in Central Japan. Elevation ranges from a few hundred feet to over 8,000 feet... there's a lot of videos of this on YT, here's one:

Are all of those people waiting for the bus?

I was in those japanese alps a few years back.

Drove from toyama, actually in a small town call tonami, and went into the alps to see these old japenese straw huts with roofs about 3 feet thick to withstand the snow. Very interesting to see how thick the old japanese roofs were to withstand the feet of snow. There were FEET of snow on the ground and i was there in march.

The reason it snows so much in that area is the fact that there is a persistent northwest flow over the sea of japan into the mountains, just draining the air of moisture. It actually doesnt get that cold and it often snows right around freezing, down in the valleys that is.

Nick Gregory last night said the pattern might be probably changing to a colder and wintry one in February.

...i heard him last nite too,ant..he's basically holding out for

'everything coming together to give us a snowstorm'..mentioned the

polar vortex breaking done and getting colder air in here..nothing definite

but nick gregory is not giving up..

These fantasy storms have been showing right around Feb. 2nd - Feb. 5th with rugularity though.

Maybe once we will get lucky.

Hopefully not feb. 4th-10th, as I will be on vacation in Mexico.

I'll text you pics while I'm in knee deep snow don't worry.

what a joke-always cold and snow days 7 and beyond...not happen' folks...we had our one event of the winter....

two events counting October...I would not rule out more snow at this point in time...Personally I think NYC gets at least another significant snowfall before Spring...2011-12 could end up in the top five warmest December/January combined average temperature...Currently January is averaging 36.2 and December was 43.3...If january ends up averaging 36.2 the Dec/Jan combo will average 39.8...seventh warmest of all time...

year.......averageDec/Jan

1931-32.......42.1

2001-02.......42.0

2006-07.......40.6

1949-50.......40.4

1912-13.......40.1

1994-95.......39.9

2011-12.......39.8

1932-33.......39.7

1936-37.......39.4

1997-98.......39.2

1889-90.......38.8
