My understanding is one snowflake counts as a trace. I could be wrong, but that is what I think it is. Were they they only place that didn't see a snowflake today. Even I saw five.

Requirements for a trace:1) Snow has to come down in an intensity of at least "Light Snow" instead of just "Flurries."2) Snow can't be accompanied with sleet, rain or freezing rain when falling. It's viable to think that CPK did not receive any snowflakes during any wintry mix just off the fact that Teterboro and LGA did not record a trace.

Here is one NWS Office definition of a trace of precipitation:

http://www.srh.noaa....d/?n=filloutb92

...Record a Trace of precipitation with a "T". A trace is defined as a measurement less than 1/100 of an inch. You may also record a trace of precipitation when it briefly rains at your location but doesn't hit the rain gauge, or if it sprinkles for a short time, but not enough to measure 0.01".

and another NWS reference:

http://www.nws.noaa....op/snowguid.htm

...Snow often melts as it lands. If snow continually melts as it lands, and the accumulation never reaches 0.1 inches on your measuring surface, snowfall should be recorded as a trace (T) and record in your remarks that the "snow melted as it landed".

I read the second one earlier in the evening. Sounds more like a judgement call. Another climate report should be out within the hour. Some winter, we are on pins and needles wondering about 'a trace of snow'.

Agree with all points.

Someone else I read raised this point: In the past, Cashman could have traded Montero for Halladay, Cliff Lee, or King Felix (each opportunity arose at different times obviously). If Pineda does not pan out, how does it make Cashman look when he could have received one of three proven Aces?

all the guys you mentioned would cost an arm and a leg (real money)...Pineda is 22, no where near free agency, isnt arbitration eligible, and a far better risk than Montero who will be a DH....in his rookie year he k'ed 9.1/9 and walked under 3 per 9...Over the course of a 15 year career those numbers translate to one place- the HOF.

GREAT TRADE...add in the signing of Kuroda and the Yankees have the best rotation in the AL....

Yep, I agree..but it is all we got at this time. Rome wasn't built in a day.. A journey begins with a step..maybe today's flurries will bring us some good luck in the significant snow department before Spring. We can hope..

Monthly, Euro Monthly

:snowing:

Really because this is what I have gotten when the monthlies came out posted from the SNE thread...

."A little information on the ECM monthlies from a Pro Met (CTRAIN) in the SNE area ..first he mentions the ECM weeklies...."Weeklies look ok week 4 after a hideous week 3 but the monthlies are ugly for feb and horrific for march. Daffodils by the ides of march!"

Now I think what people are talking about is the ECM Monthly Control Run that is on accuweather. ECM monthlies are not available to my knowledge to the general public...only to the pro mets.....

The Euro is terrible. It re establishes the PV over Greenland along with a large negative height anomaly over Alaska and Western Canada. Probably one of the worst runs in the long range that I have seen so far this winter. No doubt about it, a terrible pattern for snow for almost everybody on the East Coast.

00Z Euro is scary at 192-216. Practically the whole US is under the torch.

I actually feel sorry for the Weather Channel. This and hurricane season are their 'prime times' in terms of viewership and they get this. You can tell, because on Thursday, they were treating the Chicago storm as a virtual blizzard.

Oh man...I was just about ready to plant tomatoes.

Interesting fact about the recent intensity of storms over the past 18 months or so... NJM, our homeowners & auto insurance company, is raising rates mostly due to the extraordinary increase in wind-related claims they have experienced. Anyone else get any weather-related notices from their insurance companies lately?
