Winter '11/'12 Complaint Thread

Well, I'm done here at least for a little while. It's become a chore, more than a hobby, to track/discuss winter wx the last several months and I'm losing the will to continue. Hopefully, by next week, things will look brighter, but I doubt it. 2009-10 taught me that hope is sometimes misplaced. At worst, I'll talk to you guys again in 2012-13, although I figure I'll pop in at least a couple of times before then, regardless of the weather.

Take care and best of luck the rest of the cold weather season.

I really do hope things turn around for you. Good luck! I wont lie but just the idea of this system going further south burns my @ss. One thing if we have blocking but to do it with NO blocking? UGH. Not saying that is what will happen either. Just the idea of it. We should not be sweating tracks too far to the south with a raging +NAO/+EPO in THIS region. Ofcourse ma nature tends to do whatever she wants and thus here we sit sweating over a track going south of us. Only in this winter. lol

Good luck to all.

Get off that lake shore pronto! They have the GO trains to KW...move out this way we are still having bursts of winter.

I'm sorry to see you quit posting. I felt the way you do many times over the past years, but I've come to realize that it's more about tracking and forecasting rather than geting hit or crushed (that's for Alek). I'm also here for the interaction with those who share my fascination with the weather. The hard part is getting over the obcession wanting everything to hit MBY. It's hard to explain how to do that. One thing is that I don't lose sleep waiting for every model run, but I still do watch closely if it looks like a system may be interesting and is likely to affect our area of posters.

Good luck to you.

Take a good long break. The extended has turned to %$#@ anyway. The way it looks right now only thread the needle storms will be the story. Even this crap storm is basically thread the needle with a warm up coming 36 hours later.

I was originally hoping we could do a similar widespread Jan 22, 2005 type system with this arctic boundary but instead we get this weak wave with a narrow snow band.

You will have your turn. Unfortunately this year looks like a never ending dud!

That's tough, but hopefully things turn around for us here in Toronto. I'm taking this lack of snow pretty well, though there are times I wonder why Mother Nature is doing this to us. Ten years ago, I would have freaked out more.

To be honest, I actually took an extended break last month, though I peaked here from time to time. And trust me, you will be back here in a flash when Toronto gets a big snowstorm or a surprise event.

Take care and we are looking forward to your return. My bet on your return is next week. Book it! LOL.

Hey I left too and I dont know why I came back in the first place. I thought today's storm was going to be interesting but it turned out crap and a waste bucket just like every other f*king storm since 2009-10. I respect you man and I understand your anger because this is just get annoying.

I'm in par with canuck. Time to take a break from weather and forecasting. I'm done with this pathetic Winter...2012-13 ftw hopefully.

If all goes well I might be back in 2012-13.

Later man and everyone else. Take care :)

Guess I'll put this here though it's more wondering out loud. Can't say I remember the last time I have watched a band of significant snow miss to my north right after having a low of -1.

:baby:

Look at the bright side. We're over 8" total, with a little more to go, since last Thursday. Plus hail the other night. That's pretty good in a lousy winter.

I may have spoke too soon. This new band is looking really healthy all the way back into central IL. We'll see what it does.

As of today, FWA is at a +7" departure for the season. We are the snow magnet of the Midwest. The problem is that it is the crapfest called the winter of 2011-'12. I would like to be the snow magnet in good winter. I guess I shouldn't be complaining because I am doing well compared to others on here but that's what this thread is for, right? :D

Next 10 days looks like crap.

Discuss.

Going from a sugar snowstorm with temps in the mid-teens Friday night to a slight risk of severe weather early Monday morning is sickening. La Nina is making sure that, after giving us an un-ninalike constant cold/snowy winter in '10-11, she rides her roller-coaster as extreme as possible this winter.

Next 10 days looks like crap.

Discuss.

Not much different than the last 60+ days. Crap Crap and more Crap.

Guess I should say too much because I have seen somewhere in the neighborhood of 42" of snow falling this winter. Some winter's are about being in the right place at the right time. Last nights storm was the first time I was in a pretty lousy place but still saw a 2 1/4" snowfall.

Next storm is too far away. Western UP is a bit of a haul for what may only be a decent snowfall. Now if the UP was about to get an EPIC storm I just might go for it if I can get the time off work. An EPIC storm in the UP would be something special to see.

My philosophy is to go to the storm and make it MBY whenever possible.

The crap of Winter 2011-12 continues…it’s an absolute joke. It’s not all about statistics, snowfall amounts, etc. in any one particular location…I’m talking about the overall feel of this winter.

Perhaps this is a philosophical question…but why does it have to be so difficult for DJF to be winter? It seems like we need everything to go right to get a snowstorm…and then even if that occurs, it melts two days later. It shouldn’t be like that. Winter means snow and cold…that should be the norm, not the exception.

It should not have to try so hard to be winter in DJF. You shouldn’t need everything to go perfectly to have a tiny bit of winter. Does anyone else get that same feeling?

Sure, I’d expect the ups and downs in November or March…but not DJF. In Summer it’s hot, in Fall and Spring it’s changeable…so you’d think the Winter season would actually have winter-like conditions. We don’t live in Alabama.

Where are the clippers? Where are the arctic fronts? We’ve had one decent arctic outbreak all winter…the winter low at ORD so far is 5F. In the 1980s, you could count on winter. Sure, we had the anomalous 1982-83 El Nino year…but other than that, I could ice skate on frozen lakes, go sledding and cross-country skiing on most days, and encounter cold and wintry conditions on a regular basis…and occasionally some brutal hardcore winter-like conditions. I’m not saying it has to be constant cold and snow for 100 days in a row…but in DJF, it should feel like winter, where cold is -10F, “typical” is in the teens F, and warm is 30-35F. This winter (and in many winters since 1996), cold is the teens, “typical” is 30s, and warm is 50F+.

I know it’s frowned upon on this board to wish for things…but have you ever been passionate about something? I know people who love the Chicago Bears so much that they are still feeling down over how this past season ended. It was almost one month ago! I don’t care as much about football, so no big deal in my eyes…but the point is that I understand their passion. Or, if you’ve hoped for a new job or applied for college and hoped to get in…and it doesn’t work out. What is wrong with caring about something so much that it hurts?

It should not be that difficult to have some “spread the wealth” snows for everyone in the Plains, Midwest, GL, Ohio Valley, our friends in southern Canada, etc. Is it really that much to hope for? Not saying that incredible blizzards need to destroy civilization every week…but just a winter-like feel outside, during the Winter season. That’s all.

I, and many others on this forum, have the same passion and love for winter. This is a weather forum/community, so why shouldn’t we long for the good times when it has been so crappy recently? I would rather engage with folks who are passionate about something, even if it leads to ups and downs. Of course it’s harder to do on an internet forum…but it’s like Cheers where everyone heads to the bar to drown their sorrows when things are tough. Sure, I agree that it can get annoying if people complain every single day…but we all need to vent. It’s human nature.

If you want to call me a weenie, that’s fine. I’m proud of it. I have a meteorology degree and have done some forecasting…so I understand the need to take emotions out of it when giving an objective forecast. And many people on this board do a good job of that. But when you love something as much as winter, it’s ok to bring your emotions into it…that’s what life is all about. I have two small children, and my greatest hope is that they love something in life as much as I love winter.

I just wish we would have a prolonged period of cold with snow cover. This back and forth cr*p is irritating. I'm not a severe cold fan, but between 15°-25° is my favorite winter temperature range with short spells of 30° air. Having at least 30 straight days of snow cover is a definite bonus during the winter. I can't complain too much because the last 5 winters have pretty much been just that here! This month is an improvement, but it's more typical of what December should have been like! Now I think will be having a cold spring with snow and cold rain well into April. ...But I prefer to have winter in winter!

Some years just stink for snow/cold/snowcover. Historically there have been years as bad or even worse than this one. Not much you can do except enjoy it as it comes. I've given up the idea of long lasting snowpack this winter (and now that we're about to enter February we are/will be battling the sun angle in that regard) which makes it easier but I understand that not everyone thinks that way.
