mnweather
Idk what MSP 30-yr average is, but their 125-yr avg is just 45.6". Until last winter, they were going through the same problems Toronto is, well-below normal winters. (DTW beat MSP 4 of the 6 winters before last year). MSP new 30 year average is 50.9". roardog
You got that right, quite a few rough years before last winter. Until the last few winters, it seems the upper midwest and northern plains had winter after winter of above average temps and below average snow. There are exceptions but the '90s and first three quarters of the '00s were rough there if you like below average winter temps.

Alright there were a couple of crappy years but overall snowfall was excellent.
snowstormcanuck
You got that right, quite a few rough years before last winter. Was looking through some of MSP's F6s from the late 1990s. Was surprised how little snow there was in October and May of those years (I've always assumed you guys can count on a least a couple of inches in those two months). May snow is pretty rare up this way, you can count on at least a trace in places but it is actually fairly rare to get over an inch with a system. October can dump some heavy snow though, usually though October does not see a lot of snowfall either but definitely more than May would have. Thanks. Yeah, I was mistaken about how productive Mays are up there. Even their April longterm average is more paltry than I had imagined. And yikes regarding 2007-08. Meanwhile 200 miles to the SE ~100".

Yeah 2007-08, really March saved that season from being really awful for them. Stark contrast to what transpired farther east and south like you said. 1977-78 is another good one. Banner season for a lot of the Midwest/Lakes...yet pretty blah for MSP, relatively speaking.

weatherpsycho
Looks like its a no-snowmobile trail region storm for Friday. Did you make it to Allegan last weekend? I was out there and noticed the snowmobile trails were very HEAVILY used. Even though were I was got 18" of snow, by Sunday the snowmobile trails were showing dirt in places due to the heavy usage! weatherpsycho
Once again the models are showing a quick melt down after a decent snow event (even if it misses MBY). Today's 12Z GFS shows the 10C 850 approaching northern IL/IN on Sunday.

Van Buren was a mistake... except the Kal-Haven trail it was snow starved. Just west of Allegan was in good shape.... I heard it all got fried this week though. This winter just sucks ass. Jonger
Looks like the jackpot will be under 6 inches and it will be toast 2 days later. Its one of those storms that its hard to get excited about.
Jonger
I think the average is like 220, but they count that up in Painesdale south of Houghton. Painesdale is higher in elevation then Houghton. They use to take the measurements up at the airport which isn't in Houghton, but north of Hancock. It also is located in the higher elevation. The snowfall is so variable here. You can go a few feet up a hill and get a lot more. The very first snow you can tell where the higher elevation is. I seen down by the canal there wasn't any snow to be found and just go up Memorial Drive which is M26 and start to see snow. Is Krupps resort in a high elevation spot. That place seems to get plastered more then other spots.

I left Tuesday mid-day just as it was beginning to snow again. Sadly the warmth WAY overperformed those 20 hours. Yeah this winter has been pretty bad! Powerball
So much for Chicago's futility record. They're in the bullseye of yet another Winter Storm. There's still February, March and April. They can't be any worse storm-wise than the past two months (not that they've been unprecedented awful, just too lackluster for my liking). snowstormcanuck
Well, I'm done here at least for a little while. It's become a chore, more than a hobby, to track/discuss winter wx the last several months and I'm losing the will to continue. Hopefully, by next week, things will look brighter, but I doubt it. 2009-10 taught me that hope is sometimes misplaced. At worst, I'll talk to you guys again in 2012-13, although I figure I'll pop in at least a couple of times before then, regardless of the weather. Take care, and if I don't post here again this cold weather season, best of luck the rest of the way.
