My winter rant. I hate how every storm, no matter what magnitude, is full of multiple posts proclaiming "heaviest snow this season" or "most intense snow I've seen in years"

Weenieism at its best!

lol its the excitement. Its all in the visibility for me....I had two whiteouts this winter actually (Jan 29 and Feb 10) and while yesterday was certainly the biggest snowflakes Ive seen in I dont know when, which really reduced the visibility, it was not the heaviest snow Ive seen this season. Cant speak for the rest of the region though.

My personal fav is leading up to a storm, in the high-trafffic threads as new model data comes out, you will see posts within seconds of each other "GFS looks north" and "GFS looks south" depending on posters location

It wouldn't be a weather forum winter storm thread without such a claim :mapsnow: .

I have grown used to all those type of posts. My favorite is when some claims something but can't produce a photo to back it up (really yah can't buy a phone without a camera). Such is life on a forum with the old 'my dad can beat up your dad" mentality. :pimp:

There's actually a chance this ends up as a top ten least snowiest winter. Currently at 15.8" at TOL... barring any miracles during this storm or any others, 17.1" is the target.

I stand corrected...TOL only picked up 1.0", so they are at 16.8" on the season. However, I have a list of Toledos top 20 snowiest/least snowy winters and it looks like the CLE NWS accidentally forgot to add 1997-98s 16.0" to the list, so really 16.8" as it stands would be the 11th least snowy winter on record for TOL. #20 is 19.6" (1924-25).

For some reason I am not bothered at by this failure. I am in a great mood today. Normally I am a bit more grumpy after a storm failure like this. Guess I am getting used to the SE MI 'how can this storm be FUBAR'ed' :arrowhead:

Im not that bitter about it but it would have been nice to see a nice event before the seasons end.

Another pet peeve of mine...the general mantra that SE MI always fails in a storm. Since the GHD disappointment last year, I count FIVE advisory/warning events that exceeded expectations (Feb 5, Feb 20, Mar 5, Mar 11 in 2011 and Feb 10, 2012), one that met expectations (Feb 25, 2011), and one that we were screwed (Feb 24, 2012).

Now if we are talking epic snowfall totals, I will agree with that mantra. Those chances are few and far between but the few chances we do get we fail at (and this storm had no prayer of dropping epic snow). But when it comes to advisory/warning snowstorms, we have exceeded expectations rather than fallen short more often than not ever since the imminent NW trend seemed to stop in 2007.

My only real complaint about this storm, since I saw bust coming for my area since late afternoon yesterday, is that it didnt snow as much as I thought in Oakland county. I had planned to drive up there today and take a walk in a park somewhere to enjoy the scenery, expecting 4+ inches of plaster. Looks like Id have to drive to Wisconsin

Drive to Clare county. Harrison reported 12 inches already. lol Actually we're not doing too shabby up here either. Probably about 4 inches or so on the ground right now.

How many 16"+ or even 2"+ storms have you seen? Exactly. ;) Talking major/blockbusters failures.

Go ahead and take a drive to Frankenmuth. It would still be a pretty drive with some good picture taking.

Saddest thing about today was that 4 days ago this was supposed to be "my storm". The EURO for several runs was only spitting out decent snow for Toronto, and nothing further west. 96 hours later I get to be bombarder with picturesque snowfall photos from MI to WI while I have puddles of rain.

Im approaching 35" on the year. Imagine living in Indy, Columbus, Pittsburgh, St.Louis, K.C, Philly, NYC and DC what the heck have they had? Basically Notta!. We can't totally complain about this winter. Overall its a horrible winter from coast to coast maybe the exceptions of Denver and Far Eastern Canada toward Quebec City. I would take still take YYZ over DTW even though the 3 winters have been garbage but overall its better for snow events and Snow longer on the ground. We had a horrible winters from 1994-1998. Trust me the garbage your going through happens here as well. Hang in there it will change. It changed here

Good points all. Right now I'm too despondent for any of them to sink in though. No...alcohol will be my pep talk today.

Oh I know. I have seen zero 16"+ and zero 2'+ storms (Im assuming you meant 2', if you meant 2"+ umm then Ive probably seen 100 in the last 10 years  ). I just meant that this storm never looked to be an epic snowstorm, so its not fair IMO to say we always fail when we dont with these type of storms, in recent years we usually do as expected or better.

Next weekend is my up north trip, and I have just lazed around doing nothing but catching up on laundry and stuff (after working 10 of the last 11 days). So I will just keep my fingers crossed that storm hits up north this week!

Oh, and out of our 2.2" snow we now just have a T of snowcover LOL. Just patches in areas where the grass didnt soak it all up. Our temps sat at 34-37F all morning and early afternoon until temps just now started dropping, along with dewpoints as well. Even DTW just a few miles to my west didnt get higher than 34F. All because of where the L tracked. Kudos to the RUC for being the only model to catch onto it, though you cant blame forecasters for not buying it because being too far NW is definitely a RUC bias. I have seen 25.2 inches of snow this season with just 20 days with 1"+ snowcover.

I know it probably sounds corny, but I honestly do really feel sorry for you, more than myself, with this storm. I cant believe your luck. I dont know what I can say other than its BOUND to change soon.

I was pissed this morning, but nowhere near the type of curled up in the fetal position frothing at the mouth catatonia I used to experience. I guess after being screwed so many times you start to get used to it.

Actually I meant 12"+ for you but I was really just poking some fun at yah. ;)

'Epic storms' seems to consistently fail around here for one reason or another. Really it is bad luck. Truthfully the northern burbs have had several major storm 12-18". I will TOTALLY agree with you that this area is NOT bad. In fact I have had some great major storms over the past several years Jan 2008, April 2005, Dec 2000, Jan 2005, Jan 99 and several others.

I think many here in SE MI several are just frustrated with the whole EPIC thing. It's like the Lions Superbowl drought. :yikes: It just feels like everyone but the Detroit area has had an EPIC storm.

Currently we still have 3-4" on the ground from todays storm. Our total is 4-5". It has been snowing in NW Oakland county pretty much all day. It is VERY wet though and has melted some throughout the day.

Yeah the RUC did great!

I'm going to get drunk tonight and forget this awful Winter and this storm and also remember the mistakes I made with this girl.

I cant believe it...a new record low...and the previous record low is 09-10. <_<

This whole winter is fail and a complaint haha.

can it get any more worse than this.

I've already got 6 heinekens in me. Hope to be comatose by tomorrow.

And lol wtf. You're in high school. Unless you're a remedial student aren't you a little young to be getting drunk?

Yeah the RUC did great!

This is one of the most difficult storms to pin down a final total. I have a rough 3" depth but im sure i picked up around 4". So not sure how to register this as.

You guys certainly have been getting hosed. But no way does that happen. TOL will pass 17.1" by tomorrow probably lol.

Yeah, it could be worse, I can only imagine going from 81-82 to 82-83 (#2 Snowiest with 68" to #3 least snowiest with 12"). That would be absolutely brutal

I am counting it as 4" as that is what I have on the ground. I really believe about 5" fell here in NW Oakland county but some was melting plus the ground was warm too. This is very heavy & VERY wet snow. In the end it was not that bad of a storm as it really reminds me of an late March/early April type snow event.

Lived it. That was quit the best/worse combo. 81-82 was my #1 snowiest winter in SEMI with well over 100" in the northern burbs (I wish I would have kept records for that winter). 82-83 was my #1 worst winter I have ever experienced. It was brutal having them fall like that!!

It's not just a feeling, it's a statistical fact.

EVERY city from the Plains to the East Coast has had an epic snowstorm in recent history except Detroit (and St. Louis), even Toronto and Minneapolis.

For me, an overachieving 1-3" snowstorm does nothing, especially when the snowfall rates and snowflake size are largely crappy. Yeah, a storm like February 20th is an exception to this rule, but the fact that it followed the hills of the GHD Blizzard and, to take it a step further, I missed out on all of the thundersnow to the north and south, it certainly wasn't the greatest overachieving snowstorm for me either.

That said, my prediction of several 1-3" snows totaling up to a 35" winter (and my prediction that Toronto will remain winter storm free) is working out quite well.
