Zachary Lassiter
How do models do with lake effect snow events... I'm kinda curious with the storm that will be impacting Michigan in a few days. Is there one model that tends to historically do better over others?
Ellinwood
Use hi-res models like the ARW, NMM and RUC. The global models and other lower-res models are very poor with picking up total QPF from lake-effect storms given their mesoscale nature. The key thing the lower-res models can catch is the overall synoptic flow, providing winds and temps in the lower levels that help determine the strength, location and duration of lake-effect events (even though they don't necessarily reflect the events well at the surface).
