Predict the number of tornadoes in 2012.

Looks like Tony's guess may be pretty close, with extrapolation on Joe's figure through September and considering we've had a couple of events this Fall/early Winter (Oct. 17th/Christmas).

Depends on the ratio of prelim vs verified for Oct-Dec. If we take Jan-Sep confirmed and add on the prelim reports for Oct 1 through Dec 18 (yeah I realize this won't be accurate), it only brings the total to 909.

Yeah I still think there is a good shot that we come up short of 1000.

Wikipedia lists 28 confirmed tornadoes for the Dec 25-26 outbreak. Who knows if it's right but I'm going to assume it's reasonably close. We should finish the year safely below 1000, possibly even below 950. Really an amazing year of futility when you consider the trends in reporting.

From the SPC...

"Did you know that 2012 will have the fewest number of tornado and severe thunderstorm watches issued by SPC since moving to Norman in 1997? Just 697 watches were issued this year (two numbers were inadvertently skipped which is why the last watch issued was #699). This breaks the previous record low (since SPC has been located in Norman) of 727 in 1999.

The average number of watches per year for 1997-2012: 844. The greatest number of watches in a year during that time span: 983 in 2003."

Sub 1000 almost seems impossible in this day and age with increased detection.

Unless you a REALLY slow severe year. If it had been 30 years ago, last year's number may have been under 750.
