We can talk about the 18z, 384 gfs if you'd like. Unfortunately, that's all I got...

That frame has rain for mby

I'm still not worried. We were spoiled the last couple Winters. It's to be expected to be "let down" to an extent. Climo says Feb is SC's time.

The last couple of winters have not erased the visions of almost a decade without snow that are still fresh in my head  I didn't loose hope then and this rollercoaster winter.... I'm just enjoying the ride until March. I'll get my chance, and so will a lot of others.......no worries here :icecream::snowman:

It's just the 5th, right? It wasn't "warm hanging on" when I had a high of 26 the other day either. haha

you guys know what I mean about the warm winter we've had so far. yes it was a high here the other day of 24 but in winters past it stayed cold I don't mean 24 but always around 40 or at most 45 for a warm day, well this isn't your typical winter. guess i'm just frustrated and yes was spoiled the last two winters but those were winters like when I was growing up and I thought they were back for a while. I was hoping we were in about a 30 year cycle, back to the snowy winters. like the 50's , 60's, 70's and some 80,s

Well this coming up mild shot is really impressive. Local weather is calling for 60 tomorrow. We should be in the 40s at least. World news did a thing about the weather and how the whole country was way above normal and how Florida was colder than up in Minn. I quess at least we are not the only ones paying for this lack of cold and snow.

yes, i know what you mean. I was just poking fun by picking out a statement of yours and twisting the context. I didn't mean any harm by it.

Even if we are headed back into better winters, there will still be those winters that are going to be abnormally warm.

oh that's fine I knew what you meant, no harm taken, just frustrated. Your right you will always have some winters thrown in that will be much warmer than others even in a great cycle.

The last 2 winters were cold and snowy for some, esp. cold. But before that, the Winters around here were mild. I mean bbq in the backyard mild in Dec. and Jan., from roughly 2005 to early 2009. 2006 to 2008 was really hard for snow and cold lovers here, much warmer and drier than what we have now. Anyway, things are changing. The second half of Winter could make up for the rough first part.

I remember at UT when everyone hated on Phil Fulmer for always going 10-2 and not being able to win the big one. Now, we are 5-7 and not bowling...and trying to convince ourselves that the new coach will be a winner. It's all in perspective. It will get cold and it's going to snow somewhere in the South. It's probably not going to be like last winter. But yes, there is cold on each of the major models. DT even hinted at more cold on his FB page. So, enjoy the warmth, the fact that it's not boiling like last summer, and know the best of winter is yet to arrive.

Thanks Foothills, I always enjoy your post and you know I do believe like you say that the second half of winter will be better.

I think we (yes, I'm a Vol fan) have a good coach now, if he is (hopefully) as good as his father, we're in business. It's a very young team, I think next year will be MUCH better.... oh yea, for snow too! Sorry, off-topic. :offtopic::)

Yeah - the whole "warm won't leave" thing is a little unwarranted at this point. We're not even a month into winter, yet it seems like I've been hearing this mantra for ages now. It could "hang on" through the duration, but it is way too early to tell.

Besides, there are thousands of us that would be completely happy with cold temps for a while to recharge from the ridiculous summers.

This seems to fit more in the banter thread, so apologies....

Since Sept 1st, the AO has been positive an unthinkable 115 out of 127 days - or 91% of the time - and negative in only 4 days since Nov 18th

Over the same period, the NAO has been positive 106 out of 127 days - or 83% of the time - and negative 0 days since Nov 18th

That tells me we have to be due for some negatives in there.

Great stats to put into perspective at how impressive this pattern has been and how long these blocking patterns have been at this extreme plus side.

True, most winters have a flip in there. Sometimes the timing coincides with seasons, sometimes not. But when it flips, its usually a hard flip. It would fit the past several years pattern to be a hard flip too. There's never any guarantees in Winter, but I've looked at many from front to end, and quite a few that had extremes, also had both ends of the extreme, esp. in a Nina.

what really is interesting to me, has there been a winter analog year where essentially the WHOLE lower 48 has been above normal temps at this point in winter?

Much of the west has been either normal or below..

So, for the record, here's the corresponding 500mb height anomaly map that I don't EVER want to see again, lol

Looks like the 0z gfs is holding our bowling ball 500 low back in Tx. again. I'm out to 117 (1/10) and it's still in Tx. We have a kicker coming though. Another closed 500 low coming into Cali.

Yeah, that thing in Cali is new.

skied Steamboat the week before Christmas and it was really bad by their standards. About 1/2 of normal. Lots of rocks, junk in the snow, and ICE!

TW

Ya i had a buddy go out to Colorado also and he said the same thing. Not very good conditions at all. Also has been on the news with such a horrible winter across all the USA.
