mappy
In kind of exciting news, my dew point went from 12 to 16 in a little over an hour
Ian
Looks like we "wasted" a lot of the brighter returns to raise the dewpoint enough for snow to reach the surface. [weenie] That will make it easier for snow from the 2nd s/w to reach the surface [/weenie] plenty of places seemed to start snowing right away. H2O
here's that "super band" almost right over me now!!! http://www.marylandwx.com/klwxmetro.php This storm will only be legit when you post pressure change maps from unisys.
mitchnick
plenty of places seemed to start snowing right away. 0Z sounding shows air was not that dry http://vortex.plymouth.edu/cgi-bin/gen_uacalplt.cgi?id=KLWX&pl=skewt&cu=la&pt=parcel&size=640x480
chris87
0Z sounding shows air was not that dry http://vortex.plymou...el&size=640x480 in the cloud layer....but below that (800 mb down) it was quite dry, it's hard to get snow through especially given the weak forcing. Yeah I was about to say, that actually is a dry sounding. It's the surface that sucks right now.

Ian
0Z sounding shows air was not that dry http://vortex.plymou...el&size=640x480 i think people are generally happy perpetuating myths (dew points too low etc) that fit their story. it will snow with RH 40+.. it happens plenty. most every storm starts with some virga. this is a crappy vort.. if lwx would switch out of clear air mode radar would look pretty poor. chris87
well, that just goes to show you what a great winter this is going to be.... you need vertical motion and moisture to get precipitation...tonight we barely had either.
mitchnick
there's less than 100mb with the RH below 40% http://weather.unisys.com/upper_air/skew/skew_KIAD.txt

Ian
meanwhile this first batch seems to have done basically what 12z nam showed.. band is getting better organized heading east. we're getting a few flakes now here.

Ian
very true, and when you have ~30 to 42% RH in the bottom 150 mb you won't get much to reach the ground given the weak forcing. DC has been 40+ all day or at least since midday... it's marginal but we did not virga that much here considering how little snow is falling. i guess further north it might be more of an issue.. but the dew point talk is at least slightly misguided. it can snow with dew points of 0. chris87
there's less than 100mb with the RH below 40% http://weather.unisy...w/skew_KIAD.txt look at 810 mb...that's cloud base...you have light snow fall out of cloud base into a 150 mb deep layer of sub 45% RH, hence flurries after 45 minutes of virga

Ian
it's all about RH...we had virga here in Silver Spring for about 45 minutes before spotting a few mangled flakes. i agree.. i've been repeating that for hours. the bigger issue here is forcing as it seems you agree. i just get miffed with "right for the wrong reasons" stuff.
