220? Wow.

How many hours total to make what you are striving for?

Is the water coming off the town system or do you have a well?

I can lay down 5-6" an hour, so not many. I have a well, a very fast refilling well...so no worry there. I know people who run all night at 12 GPM, so do the math there...maybe 3000 gallons a night? And they're fine...it's really not as bad as it seems.

Enough to set up a few rails for when I don't feel like driving 20 minutes to the mountain. I'll probably r un for a couple more hours for a 3' base, then maybe run for a couple hours tomorrow night facing the other way for some "landing area" snow.

I have a snow gun too that I was going to fire up then I wondered what impact it might have on my temp sensor. That last time I used it I could fill up an area away from where my temp sensor is but I can't do that any more.

How much impact would a 2-3'X25'X50' packed power area have? I kind of wish I had it last night...might have made it below 0.

Maxed out at 20.3F today (unless it creeps back up tonight)

Currently 19.0F

And nice job with the snow gun Chris

Not sure why folks got a problem with it

I don't think anyone has a problem with it. Quite the contrary as making snow is as weenie as a snow lover can get. Dude is into snow, and it's kind of crazy to see someone making it in their back yard.

I make my living off of snow. My 5 best friends are people I met through skiing or were brought closer to by skiing. I've been all over the place because of snow. I've done things many people will never experience because of snow. If I can make some in my backyard and nerd out, why not?

13/7, Don't worry about the haters Chris. Have fun dude. I haven't made snow in the yard in years but I might fire up the gun this weekend. I think my daughter will get a real kick out of it.

Did you imagineer yours yourself also? I think half the fun is making it...wouldn't be able to buy one I don't think.

If I had a sloped yard I probably would fire one up myself so the kids could sled. When I was a young weenie about 5 or 6 years old, I used to try and make snow with a spray bottle filled with water when the temp got down to zero, didnt work

I think it's pretty hilarious/awesome/:weenie: that you guys both are so into the skiing and snow making. I'm sure the vultures would love to make a parody of this whole thread of snow making, there's a lot of great material.

Just curious though is the snow quality similar to what is made on the mountain or does it depend more on what it's like outside?

Last winter, we had gotten to below 5 below a few times (including one while I was at my school). I did the old cup of hot water thrown in the air trick. Works nicely.

The setup Chris is making looks like it has a similar valve/nozzle at the end to some of the tower guns I have seen.

Sort of surprised Blizz doesn't make it. He piles up 10 foot snowbanks with a shovel, but chucks weenies at those who play with compressed air and water

Well it depends...tonight I tried to go for quantity, not quality...hence my 2'+ pile in a little less than 4 hours lol.

If I mount the gun at the top of my tower (20') and there isn't a lot of wind and the WB is below 15 or so, it will be pretty dry snow. I had the gun mounted about 5' up today and the snow quality was wet, but not so wet that you could squeeze it and water would come out. I'd say it's pretty similar to mountain man made.

The science is exactly the same as a mountain's tower gun. You have bulk water nozzles (mine has two) which are atomized by pressures around 450 PSI. Then, you have an internally mixing nucleator nozzle which has 90 PSI of air and some water for the air to attach to. That mixes externally with the two bulk water nozzles and supercools it.

SnoGun-1_1024.JPG

In the above photo, the two bulk nozzles are seen on the left. He put a valve to select whether to run one or both nozzles. That inlet on the top right is water only. On the bottom, he has his nucleator nozzle with a needle valve to control the amount of water which is allowed in to mix with the air. On the bottom center is his air in line. His nucleator I believe is a "Hago" on the bottom left. I believe it's a furnace nozzle. that's an externally mixing nuc.

Making snow is great...my compressor crapped out after a few winters...probably haven't done it in 10 yrs or so but it was always a good time.

That does look like a hago nozzle. Nice job on the gun! FTW, the compressed air hits the misting water droplets coming out of the nozzle. Since the droplets are under pressure, they supercool when they hit atmospheric pressure and the compressed air. That forms a ice crystal nuclei. The same happens with the pressurized water coming out of the top nozzle and when they combine, you have snow. Like Chris said, depending on the WB and hang time, you can have wet or powder snow.

I used to crank mine up when I lived at a different house just have the last snow around. May snow anyone?

That's not my gun, I have an internally mixing nuc. But yeah...the air rapidly expands when it decompresses and cools right?
