snowman21
Out of curiosity, anyone have some stats on below zero temps without snow cover? snowman21
cool. MVY must have been down below 0F since 2000....if not 2005, then 2004. Yeah they were below zero 4 times in '05 and twice in '04. Problem is in the climate record on a lot of the days the snow depth is missing, so I couldn't verify the coincidence of below zero lows and bare ground without a little more research. snowman21
Boston had no snow over 1/22/05? Hell of a thaw? Snow depth was likely zero at 12Z that morning that they recorded the low of -2. My guess is the 9.1 inches of snow came later in the day. Or it could be crappy snow depth data, also a possibility. I'd have to do a little more research to know for sure. OSUmetstud
Boston had no snow cover 1/22/05? Hell of a thaw? I'm pretty sure hartford had snowcover on Feb. 11th, 2011, also.

It shows as zero snow depth on the BOX F6 for BDL as well, for what it's worth. I was gonna list all the caveats... but that could be kinda long LOL. NCDC snow depth data can be questionable. There I said it

wxmanmitch
10.9° F and dropping. I'm wondering if I'll go subzero tonight. NWS P&C has me at 1° F for an overnight low, so it may be close here. Considering I'm in a bit of a sheltered valley, I could do it, particularly if the winds find a way to slacken off after midnight.

snowman21
Yea ORH 1/6/96 is wrong too. Using co-ops might yield better results since they're probably more diligent about recording snowfall and depth compared to ASOS sites.

BOS had snow cover on 1/22/05 even before the blizzard. We had back to back clipper systems right before. BOS recorded 3.1" on Jan 16-17 and then 3.3" on Jan 19-20...the highest maximum temperature recorded between Jan 17-Jan 22 was 28F.

ORH_wxman
Yea ORH 1/6/96 is wrong too. Yeah we had like 20" or more on the ground prior to the Jan 7-8, 1996 blizzard, lol. We had just gotten 14" in the 1/4/96 storm...and there was already decent snow on the ground before that one too from the snowy December.
