wisconsinwx
The 0z Euro actually puts both MSN and MKE in the 1-2/maybe 3" jackpot zone (if you could call it that). Question is do I believe it. Considering both the RUC and HRRR don't paint snow making it that far east (unless the HRRR just doesn't go out far enough), it may just be a weenie solution from my pov. turtlehurricane
Definitely under guidance but it could come up pretty fast when the inversion mixes out. The lake is gonna be a major problem for the Chicago/Milwaukee areas anyways, the east winds will kick up as this comes in. Further inland, the inversion will mix out, but things may stay below freezing. 30.6 °F on top of the met building, so the near sfc freezing layer is pretty thick, and could hold its own for awhile even w/ warmer air aloft. Temps at 850 hPa are already up to 3-4 °C, so we're likely to start with freezing rain and maybe some sleet. CAA at 850 hPa should start soon after the onset of precip, and eventually it'll go over to snow. The perfect recipe to ruin the roads.
Geos
Geez UGN down to 25/25, this could be trouble. There's a fog/haze hanging low to the ground here. I think icy roads are a given around here for a little while at least once the precipitation moves in. They might be slicking up already with this fog. Local forecast calling for snow and freezing rain in a couple hours, then to rain/snow mix. Best chance for sticking snow after the winds switch offshore. turtlehurricane
Precip is about to move in. Up to 30 °F at the airport, while the temp on top of the met building has dropped to 29 °F, which really shows that some mixing action is going on. turtlehurricane
Precip has begun, freezing rain mixed with sleet. 28.5 °F on top of the met building, so all the rain coming down is very supercooled. 20-25 dBZ echoes approaching.
turtlehurricane
Coming up on 1 hour of freezing rain, temperature of 29 °F on top of the met building. Ice accretion is occurring on every surface, and there's almost a solid coating now. The sidewalk isn't a slip n slide yet, but you can definitely slide along it. A band of 35 dBZ echoes is moving in, and the rain has been getting heavier. No ice pellets anymore as far as I can tell. This is all very fascinating to me since I've never seen an ice storm before. Even at this early point we've got more freezing rain than I've ever seen in Madison.
