Chicago Storm
Yeah, considering the lack of snow cover this torch was pretty faggy. We've achieved 60 degree temps often shortly after melting deep snow cover. Maybe the upcoming late week torch won't disappoint lol. stratus deck trapped under the inversion ftl. cyclone77
stratus deck trapped under the inversion ftl. Yeah we stayed cloudy till about noon. Of course even after the sun came out temps didn't jump as aggressively as I thought they would. I figured the ripping LLJ would help motivate the temps, but apparently mixing wasn't so hot. No pun intended lol.
cyclone77
...On another note, as I said earlier, I was reading through the Dec 2010 threads...you, Hoosier, and I (along with the rest of the LAF crew and MSP peeps) were living the high life. Haha, yeah we were lined up pretty nicely through that corridor. I remember thinking at the time that we would probably pay for that string of good luck eventually. Here's to the end of Dec '11. Ottawa Blizzard
36.9º (+6.5º) at LAF. Sadly, there have been bigger disaster Decembers around here. What remains your biggest December disaster? 1931? I'm not sure, but I think Toronto may have beat 1931 this year.
michsnowfreak
December 2011 at Detroit tied with 1941 for 12th warmest Dec on record with a temp of 35.5F, though the 5.7 inches of snow was nowhere near making the top 20 least snowy December list (#20 is 3.6"). Very happy to turn a new page to January! Cold looks to be on the horizon, now lets hope we get lots of snow as well!
michsnowfreak
Wow at those first 2 years on the list. December 1889 was an absolute disaster. Only winter month (DJF) on record where Detroit did not record a single flake of snow. Christmas Eve was 61 degrees with thunderstorms. Looking at Detroits top 20 warmest Decembers, its amazing how many of the years are old. 01.) 1881 - 40.6 02.) 1889 - 39.2 03.) 1877 - 38.1 04.) 1923 - 37.7 05.) 2006 - 37.4 06.) 1982 - 37.3 07.) 1931 - 37.2 08.) 1918 - 36.3 09.) 1965 - 35.9 10.) 2001 - 35.8 11.) 1891 - 35.6 12.) 1941 - 35.5 13.) 2011 - 35.5 14.) 1994 - 35.4 15.) 1998 - 35.3 16.) 1956 - 34.8 17.) 1959 - 34.6 18.) 1914 - 34.3 19.) 1952 - 34.7 20.) 1957 - 34.

More recently, December 2006 was warmer and less snowy than this past one.

hawkeye_wx
Cedar Rapids had its 7th warmest and 5th wettest December since 1953... and with only 0.1" of snow it was obviously among the least snowy Decembers ever.

Powerball
December 2011 at Detroit tied with 1941 for 12th warmest Dec on record with a temp of 35.5F, though the 5.7 inches of snow was nowhere near making the top 20 least snowy December list (#20 is 3.6"). Very happy to turn a new page to January! Cold looks to be on the horizon, now lets hope we get lots of snow as well! It's not a question of cold being on the horizon, but whether or not it's cold enough relative to average. Due to the continued lack of snow cover (and the potential for lake stratus during the heart of this cold blast to limit radiational cooling), the temperatures will likely continue to skew above average even with this "cold on the horizon." That said, we can certainly still see appreciable snow despite the otherwise piss poor temperatures and synoptic pattern. Furthermore, we're at 6.3" so far for the season, which is only half of our average snowfall to date. While that isn't partricularly good, all it takes is one good snowstorm to wipe out that deficit.
