Damn just checked out the main board.. Midland Texas is currently in 4th place NATIONALLY in terms of snowfall in major cities and still has some more snow to go tonight.. They already broke their snowiest winter of all time record, crazy winter for folks down there..

Looks like their previous biggest snowstorm on record and snowiest month on record were both set in December 1998.

Let's connect the dots and hope for a January 1999-like repeat up here soon. :D

I've been digging through the MDW COOP records, with a thread idea in the future, but it's interesting looking back at some of the past stinkers. Take 1936-37 for example. Through January 11th of that season, the total snowfall stood at 1.0". Two events past this date in January brought the season total to a whopping 4.2" by the end of the month. February continued awful, with only 4 measurable snows...all under 1.0". Through March 23, the season total stood at 7.2", before an event dropped 3.5" on March 24-25...thus sneaking the total just over 10", to 10.7"...which is where things ended at the MDW COOP that season. There were only 10 days that season with an inch or more of snowfall depth...3 of them with the late March storm...so in reality, 7 days in meteorological winter had 1"+ snow depth.

One last day of these warm temps at MSP, then back to winter. The 49 at noon ties the record(tied yesterday's record as well) so it looks like we will be breaking it fairly easily today. There are some interesting stats on below zero days at MSP on the Twin Cities NWS site. There has never been a winter where the temperature failed to drop below 0. So far we have yet to hit that mark. The lowest winter, 2001-2002, reached below zero 2 days.

That's nothing...check out McGrath, AK (SW of Fairbanks). A daily average temp of -38F during the first 9 days of January, which is a departure of -31F. Plus, 38" of snow on the ground...beautiful! :)

Interesting post...as always!

This winter, ORD has seen 1 day of 1"+ snow depth so far, with a seasonal total of 1.9".

Also, per the NWS LOT home page, Rockfrod only had 2.0" of seasonal snowfall through Feb. 16 in the winter of 1927-28. They ended that season a bit "better", as their least snowy season on record was 8.8" in 1933-34.

Here is a statistic for Chicago (ORD) that is truly remarkable about this winter.

This is the number of days with a low temp < 20F through January 10, in each winter since 1959 (when records began at ORD):

Most

1. 42 (1976-77)

2. 34 (2000-01)

3. 32 (1981-82)

4. 32 (1985-86)

5. 30 (1995-96)

Fewest

1. 4 (2011-12)

2. 9 (2006-07)

3. 9 (1979-80)

4. 10 (1997-98)

5. 10 (1982-83)

53º at LAF today, felt warmer though. Went and got the car washed...perfect timing with the approaching system.

MoneybagsWXman - washes he car just to get salted up in 3 days. My 40 bucks is going to a good home it looks like. I suppose with winter looking like its done soon you'll be able to just soap it up once or twice a week and let the rains rinse it off.
