Chicago WX
2011 has been a very wet year for several sites in the region...particularly the eastern half. Quite a few have either set their wettest year on record or are having a top 5/top 10 wettest year. In this thread, post your local totals and all-time rank. I'm posting the records for the West Lafayette 6 NW COOP, which has the longest local continuous record. The December total is only though the 15th. When it does get updated, I'll post the numbers. As it is, this is the 5th wettest year on record since 1901.
Trent
2011 was in its own league for CLE 64.25 - 2011 53.85 - 1990 53.51 - 1878 50.38 - 1950 48.53 - 1992 48.34 - 1972 47.82 - 1890 46.44 - 1996 44.59 - 2008
Bryan Wood
Cincinnati: 71.65" - 2011 57.58" - 1990 54.67" - 1880 53.41" - 1996 53.22" - 1950 It's amazing that SW Ohio has avoided major flooding considering the way that record is being smashed. Dayton: 59.75" - 1990 55.90" - 2011 54.65" - 1996 52.23" - 1993 51.26" - 1995 Dayton's top 5 rainiest years have occurred in the last 21 years. Trent
Cleveland, Toledo, Dayton, Youngstown, Columbus, and Cincinnati all broke their record. I find that to be incredible. And it extends well beyond this state.
hawkeye_wx
That's a lot of damn precip. Farther west, around here, precip totals for the year are pretty close to normal... around 34 inches. The last four years were wetter to much wetter.

Hoar_Frost
The DeKalb (Ill.) CO-OP station on the campus of Northern Illinois University (of which I am manager) is at 41.67" year to date as of 0700 today. The annual 30-year (1981-2010) normal total is 36.79", so this year's total, if no other liquid-equivalent were measured beyond today, is 113% of that normal. In other words, somewhat above normal but nothing quite to write home about. ORD's total has been getting some attention as vying for second-highest all-time total. However, it should probably be noted that this likely represents a spatial anomaly, as ORD was at the epicentre of a heavy-rain event on 23 July. The partial total for that event, in fact, qualified as highest calendar-day total on record. My thought is that many, if not most, annual totals across northern Illinois north of roughly Interstate 80 will come in modestly above normal. There may be another annual-total maximum in portions of far northwestern Illinois (say, in JoDaviess and Stephenson counties) due to another spatially anomalous heavy-rain event on 28 July. I will see if I can get hold of some data on that after the first of the year.

an uncanny otter
Windsor, ON broke it's record for most precipitation in mid-October. The airport has recorded 61.28" of precipitation in 2011, blowing away the old record of 48.73" set in 1990. Of that liquid precipitation, 5.52" has fallen as snow, and 55.83" has fallen as rain. It's had a devastating effect on agriculture around here, being described as the worst year ever for farmers. http://www.windsorst...2347/story.html

Hard to imagine how this isn't at least partially the case with every high water mark in the area given the region's climo and semi-regular occurence of localized extreme MCS activity. I agree. My point was that record tallies probably are not widespread across northern Illinois this year unlike in some other parts of the region (like in much of the region from, say, I-75 eastward). Snowstorms
Been kinda wet here, but nothing like the totals further to the S & W. Sitting on about ~39" 2008 was the wettest year on record across the GTA. Interestingly since the PDO shift back in 07, yearly precip. values have been above normal for the most part. 2008/2009 and this year are going to come in wetter than normal whereas last was bang on seasonal. Winters have also been getting wetter besides 2009-10 LOL. Lets see. Hopefully we can go back to the "snowy and cold" era prior to 1978.

IWXwx
A met from IWX provided me with FWA's data: 1. 54.58 - 1990 2. 51.78 - 1950 (1 day of data missing) 3. 48.97 - 2011 4. 44.80 - 1991 5. 44.52 - 1909 6. 44.48 - 1992 7. 44.44 - 2003 8. 44.38 - 1996 9. 43.20 - 1957 10. 43.09 - 1982 I didn't realize that 1990-1992 was such a wet period, as all 3 are in the top ten. Also, 1993 is in the top ten for both Lafayette and Chicago, but not Fort Wayne. Comparing Chicago, Fort Wayne, Detroit and Lafayette makes one appreciate differences in precipitation despite their proximity.
