stellarfun
They'll boitch until it begins affecting them directly, and then they'll holler and plead for the government to bail them out. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/26/science/earth/26norfolk.html

America gonef! Thanks for the link. Not much to say within the forum rules. Do you think it is a coincidence that a similar number of people in the US disbelieve evolution as disbelieve AGW? http://www.gallup.com/poll/21814/Evolution-Creationism-Intelligent-Design.aspx http://www.gallup.com/poll/126560/Americans-Global-Warming-Concerns-Continue-Drop.aspx

WeatherRusty
No....those are very similar activities. That's what comes to a society that values football over science. It's not football, it is belief in a system of thought which is as old as the hills rather than science.
dabize
It's not football, it is belief in a system of thought which is as old as the hills rather than science. Surely this is blasphemy? Joking aside, my point was that we could use a bit of Confucian respect for learning in this society. We have an active disrespect for same which is feeding unscientific, ignorant attitudes.
The_Global_Warmer
It is not football. Europe had their mass exodus from the church and religion in the 60s and 70s. Their biggest vice futbol. Canadians had their mass exodus from the church and religion in the 1980s their vice was Ice hockey and American football + English Futbol. Americans mass exodus is still under way. Started in the 90s. They stoppe d handing their cash to the churh plat and all major colege and pro sports even the NHL which has now passed 3 billion in revenue. The thing is Americans havent shed church and religion for enlightenment. They followed the other major western cultures from church to sports as the new opiate for the masses but they still choose ignorance over enlightenment. I think it stems from politics to some extent but I am not sure.
