meh, history repeats itself. The 30" totals for some people may never happen again for them but a 20"+ blizzard for nyc metro will happen many times between now until we die (depending how old we are) lol. Getting 20"+ is proved not to be a once in a lifetime event..1996, 2003, 2006, 2009-2010.

Errors that caused the 12z and 18z NAM and GFS to be discounted on 12/24/2010:

12Z NAM RAOB RECAP...

BRW/70026 - 10142

GUM/91212 - 10142

NCC/78988 - 10142

YNN/78073 - 10142

ZED/71126 - MISSING TTAA/BB

ASY/70414 - 10145

KCR/78384 - PURGED ALL HGTS AND TEMPS

GYM/76256 - PURGED REPORT...TWIN REPORT

(10142 = Ground equipment failure; 10145 = Bad weather conditions, no launch)

12/25/2010 0z GFS with 1.25-1.50" QPF for NYC:

Lee Goldberg's first guess after the 0z GFS came out; you can see the concerned look on his face due to the models shifting in a big way:

12/25/2010 0z GGEM gives 0.50" of QPF for NYC.

12/25/2010 0z Euro caves to the rest of the models and gives 1.00-1.25" QPF for NYC.

Craig Allen's comment on Facebook after these model runs:

"** Good data or bad, garbage in/garbage out, wish for what you do or do not want, no matter what has been said before, from feast to famine to feast....the most amazing thing has happened tonight. EVERY SINGLE COMPUTER MODEL IS NOW IN LINE FOR A MAJOR SNOWSTORM/PSBL BLIZZARD CONDITIONS LATE SUN INTO SUN NGT. NEVER IN 35+ YEARS OF DOING THIS HAVE I SEEN SUCH CHAOS LEADING UP TO A SOLUTION LIKE THIS."

Some areas outside of DC and Baltimore during the epic 2009-2010 winter recorded more than 30" in two storms, the 12/19/2009 one and the 2/6/2010 one.

this, so much.

Guys, stay strong, this winter is just beginning. You still have January and February plus some of March left, the pattern will change and I am sure you will get a good storm real soon. Now give me some good wishes for some here in Jerusalem, Israel. I have been dying to see snow here ever since I was born.

And thanks for this thread so far. Had a blast last year living this storm out with you guys and it is fun reminiscing a year later. Happy Holidays to all!

I remember cowering behind an electrical pole that night because the winds were blasting down the street unobstructed and they were ferocious. I was trying to get a video (which I got in the end) but man oh man my face was frozen solid and I had a quarter inch of snow on my eye lashes lol. About an hour later the power went out.

My power also went out for 5 mins. The winds that night were howling.

Worked the OKX day shift last Christmas Day to issue the blizzard warning and here I am again...sorry Santa doesn't have a blizzard in the bag for tomorrow as I did last year this time, but if everyone's good through New Year's Day I'll see about warming the stratosphere now that I'm back at the North Pole! :)

this thread is depressing. Might be 15 years before we see another blizzard like that. 1996-2010 - 14 years, last time we had widespread 2 feet plus event, winds over 60 mph and thundersnow combined in an allsnow event. Pure heaven

2 feet? Only people that had 2 feet was a thin stripe in eastern NJ. Most people had 14"-20".

Most of LI had much more snow from Dec. 19, 2009 and Jan. 10-11, 2011.

In Long Island? No one had 24-30" there.... For Dec 2009, yes.

Did you forget PD II??? 20-30" amounts from NJ-LI.

Seriously. LI has had 4-5 better storms in the past 10 years, then Boxing day. Snow amounts wise. And 2 of them were in the past 3 years.

December 5-7, 2003 was better for Long Island... A ton of 14-18" with some spots getting over 20" of snow.
