No-snow Decembers

Bit of a weenie post here, so I hope you'll forgive me, but what set of conditions have there been in order for winter to see 40" or more of snow for NYC?

40" or more snowfall almost always has occurred during blocky winters. Since 1950, just 1/13 winters with 40" or more snowfall had an AO average > 0 (2004-05). 30" or more seasonal snowfall has had a higher share of cases with a positive winter AO.

So far, NYC has received 8.2" snow for December.

yea for those hoping like me for a 95-96' redux its probably going to be a pipe dream since that was a blocky winter and this winter the +AO/+NAO is stinking up the show for big snowfalls

Even if an extreme winter like 1995-96 may be unlikely a winter with >30" or more snowfall is certainly within the realm of possibility.

yea it is for sure, the teleconnector EPO needs to start seeing support IMO to warrant a legit east coast storm threat come new years. not saying it cant happen without support but be nice if the EPO has support
