I think a lot of people are misinterpreting the additional moderation as saying that all light heartedness and fun are to be taken out of the threads. That is not the case at all. Its mainly the most egregious stuff we are talking about...that and trying to make sure the main wx threads (storm threat or pattern change or whatever) stay fairly banter free. We know people are going to stray OT a bit...that is generally fine within reason...but it has not always been within reason.

Pretty simple if you ask me.

I'll take the blame for this since everyone thinks this was solely my decision without any backing from the other moderators and admins.

The question I have is, why do you think this should be allowed here...but nowhere else on the website?

Go read the "Welcome SNE'ers" topic last page. That's all you need to know why no one wants to post over in that cesspool. Sorry, but we (most of us anyway) don't feel the need to spend all day making snarky comments thinking we're somehow witty by doing so, pointing out typos, and just generally being a dick to people over the internet.

Im not talking about OT...I'm talking about general control of what you post, I guess.

Why post weenies and BS in the discussion thread like CT Blizz said he would continue to do? Whats the point? And why would that be okay here and not in any other subforum?

No hard feelings, just trying to understand the mindset.

It was duly noted by someone that only SNE has this pinned Mod rule.

Still waiting for some type of response regarding why ONLY SNE.

I think the anger at Bob may be misdirected, he's just carrying out orders.

I do find it interesting that the rookie (permanent) mod was placed in charge of pinning the new rules of the game. It was almost as if the other mods were thinking, "No, you do it, you're the new guy. I'm not going to do it, and let my azz get the blame"

. . . Oh, it's 19F, frosty with a mostly blue sky.

Not to speak for CT Blizz, but I don't think he would actually do it if a mod tells him to stop. That shouldn't be allowed and I have always agreed with the premise that discussion/observation/tracking threads should be fairly sanitized and on-topic. The question most have is really over the use of subforum banter threads. Maybe we're misinterpreting the rules. I think most of us have slowly but surely gotten over the fact that we must keep the real OT banter out of the discussion threads at this point and understand the necessity of doing so.

There will still be weenies posted and the same types of fun we've always had...and it won't be just relegated to the banter thread. It will be in all of the threads. If it's not allowed,, then we will know that they have changed the rules and that fun is not allowed. That is when you'll notice the vast majority of people leaving the board

You really need to get a grip and stop being a drama queen.

All lthis maudlin talk about how things have changed and "oh woe is us! We won't be able to post about dick double entendrees on the weather side anymore!" schtick is a bunch of horse****.

This is partly our fault because we let it go on too long. Not one rule has changed. We just haven't been enforcing the ones we've got. This is a weather board, frequented by professionals and some academia. Nobody is saying you can't have fun and go slightly OT. Some banter is fine....but we are talking about the most egregious stuff. Sorry, you're not going to be able to talk about chucking dicks in every other thread. If you are upset about that and other stuff like that, then you've got way more issues than us finally enforcing rules. SNE isn't a special forum. All forums are equal. If you want to talk about stuff like that, there's a WHOLE FORUM dedicated to it. And then there's entire threads dedicated to simple side banter on the wx side as well.

And this isn't from a "foreigner", this is from a Federali. Like it or lump it.

We stand behind Etaunton 100%. He posted it because it's his subforum. You guys are already bitching about "foreigners" in your forum as it is. Admins try to stay out of this stuff because its akin to the Feds coming in on a states rights issue...we prefer the locals to handle things, but you guys are going off the rails lately whining about "change this and that", so now it's time an admin came in and tried to explain things.

"real OT banter" is something that is fairly lenient...if its about how this weather is good for drinking eggnog by the firepit...that's really not going to be the type of post that gets deleted from banter threads. Its mostly stuff that is NSFW and/or stuff that goes completely off the rail for 20-40 posts.

I think we mostly just ask people to use good judgement...but it has been shown many times on this board in all areas that there's plenty of people who lack that and we have to delete stuff. Stuff was sliding through the cracks more easily as the board volume really increased but our staff count did not to the same ratio.

Let me give an example here:

This is effing HILARIOUS. I literally spit my OJ out when I saw it. Good stuff. Come on guys, its not like we don't "get it". It's all in fun. But if I'm a guest or a newbie serious about weather and I'm a work and load this up on my computer....wtf? All we're asking is that you guys post this in the banter thread. Why is that causing all this bellyaching?

And the pinned stuff does NOT only apply to SNE. Other mods just haven't either posted it in their subforums or had the need. SNE was getting out of hand with it, so Rob pinned and posted it. This is not some targeted thing against SNE. Come on guys.

While there was whining in OT I would argue our subforum has been great for the past year. Not sure what was getting out of hand or why bob needs to come in and crack down on things that really haven't been an issue.

Speaking only for myself,I'm not saying this is just a SNE thing. I could care less about all the azz holes in OT. if any of the admin on this board had any balls they would simply shut down OT once and for all. If it didn't exist, all of this BS wouldn't have happened in the first place. instead their answer is to let it go and not moderate it as if that is going to work. Good call

What I am saying this SNE forum has always been a fun, enjoyable place and it hasn't caused anyone any angst, or done anything detrimental to the board. It's apparent the decision has been made. So you guys do what you have to do.

Of course your forum isn't as bad as everybody makes it out to be. No forum really is. That's not the issue. But we have gotten complaints about the numerous sexual references and crude language. Nobody is saying you guys can't have fun. This isn't S2K.

I've noticed more OT banter this year than past years... no crap snowNH (thinking to myself).. weve had 1 legit snow threat ( 12/8), actually interesting weather threat, since October 28. This year has been wicked frustrating and it helps passing time by if we talk about Jay's grades, skiMRGs hair, toasters, meltdowns, etc..

I know most people don't like my posts, but in a time like this, its good to make a slightly OT post to maybe spark some conversation or if anything else at least something to read while sitting at work or on your weenie at home. Most of us don't really know how to analyze a NAO, AO, PNA, MJO, etc.. or even know what half of those things are and that's primarily what the discussion had been over the past 2 months ( frankly the past 4-5 months since the summer was so boring)

I like the way it is now and I don't really want any changes. I've tried to tone it down when there is a threat, but I still also try to analyze models and provide to the discussion.. I'm probably wrong with my analysis most of the time. When I'm wrong, either will, Scott, tip, etc.. provides an explanation of why I'm wrong and not only do I get to learn, but newbies and guests who don't even know what a model is get to learn as well.

See post #138, above.

The other folks don't want to see that stuff, they don't care, and when they see it, it becomes the ole', "those sne folks are way too serious about snow with their suicide posts", etc. Then, you know where it goes from there - all out turf war, "why is sne ruining ot", etc. When that stuff is posted here, in a lighthearted manner, it eventually just goes away, after the storm, or threat is gone, with no one thinking anything of it until the next threat. In OT it just becomes more reason to keep the turf war going, and from what Ian posted over there, it will be the wild wild west, so anything goes.

Recently or in the past?

I have no problem with trying to keep this place clean... particularly since I use it at work most of the time.

I do think there's a natural reaction to project a lot of the crap that happens in OT onto this forum. I personally rarely, if ever, go into OT so I normally aren't aware of any of the drama/BS. Just sitting in the subforum most of the time I have to say things are going pretty well here. I hope the usual suspects who thrive off board drama, regional infighting, and trolling haven't tried to drag us through the mud with them.
