CapturedNature
To clarify, I did mean with a radiation shield of some kind - whether a passive or actively aspirated variety. From the Office of the Federal Meteorological Coordinator with regards to siting of co-op stations: Temperature sensor siting: The sensor should be mounted 5 feet +/- 1 foot above the ground. The ground over which the shelter [radiation] is located should be typical of the surrounding area. A level, open clearing is desirable so the thermometers are freely ventilated by air flow. Do not install the sensor on a steep slope or in a sheltered hollow unless it is typical of the area or unless data from that type of site are desired. When possible, the shelter should be no closer than four times the height of any obstruction (tree, fence, building, etc.). The sensor should be at least 100 feet from any paved or concrete surface. That's laughable when it comes to some official climo stations....Honolulu is one that I can think of off the top of my head. I agree that the shelter needs to be in the open if possible, a FARS has been shown to be much more accurate than even traditional shelters such as the cotton/stevenson. Also the radiation shield if it's too small (my case in Union) can have daytime issues but that's not addressed by these guidelines.

Well, to be fair, the official climo stations are there for air traffic safety, not for representative climatological record keeping. People seem to forget that, and it's really an NWS issue. Nonetheless, temperature sensors and their shelters should be in the open which results in full sun exposure.
