December Observation/ Weather Banter

Not happening. If things don't improve substantially by month's end I'm leaving for AK. I've already been taking steps to make it so. This must be what Winter in the MA is like. Can you imagine if this was what most winters were like? How do they stomach living where it is warm and snowless? I'd just pull the truck into the garage, close the door, put some music in a minor key on and slowly slip away.

LOL even Pete is starting to crack... its ok Pete, acceptance is the next step :)

In the sort of good news department it is snowing pretty good above 2,500ft this morning. Upslope rain in the valleys though. I've got a steady mix of rain/snow/graupel here at 1,500ft. Highest winds we've seen at this elevation this morning are sustained at 40mph, gusting to 50mph. Sounds like a freight train.

Ahh nothing like a mid December morning of ice pellets, rain, snow and strong winds. Any other year this is a 6" fluffy upslope event.

Seems ilke there's a disconnect between the wording in the ZFP and the AFD:

7 AM UPDATE...

HIGH TEMPS FOR THE DAY HAVE OCCURRED ALREADY AS MODEST CAA

OVERSPREADS THE AREA AND COMBINES WITH VERY LOW MID DEC SUN ANGLE.

TEMPS ALREADY DOWN INTO THE U30S ACROSS THE BERKSHIRES.

Just a few weenie flakes here. Shouldn't have anything more than that here.

37.0/27

I mentioned the cold front passage to my wife and she said that she though she heard some IP mixing a little before 5 this morning when we had a squall. I missed that but we had a big gust roll through around 0615.

Temps dropped here to 40° but have come up a little with the sunrise. Big 10° drop at 1250' now down to 37° with CAA taking place.

It's possible they updated the AFD, and when pushing it out it automatically retransmits some other products whether they are updated or not. I don't read too much into that stuff because I realize the forecaster probably isn't thinking when I press this button to update the AFD it's going to also send out other products that will really only update the time stamp whether it's actually updated or not. The ZFP is a general forecast anyway, and I find those temp ranges are worse in places with elevation or protected areas (think elevation range within a particular forecast zone). What does your point-and-click forecast have? Days like today are a pain to forecast temps because the public equates highs with the daytime temperature as opposed to the climatological high temperature which likely occurred at or just after midnight.

You probably should take a break from the board..

My p/c has me going to 41 at this point.

For the Pit, the ZFP typically performs best temp-wise.

Ahhh this is what the weather pattern has come down to again... splitting hairs about whether the high will be low 40s or upper 30s.

Also, what were you at midnight last night? My guess is your high today will end up being in the lower to mid 40s depending on how warm you were after midnight last night. Your temp may be falling all day, but your high for the 24 hour period of 12am to 12am will be in the 40s (maybe even 50F?)

As BOX said, your high for the day already occurred, and that was probably in the 40s as the zone product says, no? Now, your DAYTIME or afternoon high temp might be mid 30s... but the ZFP is only showing the 24 hour high expected.

No need to incite other regions Pete.

Is that really considered inciting other regions? Would someone in the Midwest that likes severe weather saying they are glad they don't live in New England be considered offensive? I wouldn't get all bent out of shape over that statement, and I doubt anyone in this sub-forum would either. I don't get this sensitivity over snow. That's really what it all comes down to. Whenever someone gets more than someone else it gets contentious whether it be during the latest K-U or seasonal averages. It's not like New England is the snow capital of the United States anyway. Are those in the mid-Atlantic also offended that the West gets far more snow than them? Or how about lake effect areas?

This is a snow forum masquerading as a weather forum.

I agree completely with your statement though... we are very, very over sensitive to comments that even come off as hinting that one person might get more snow than another.

LOL. I read the "day" as being a reference to the daytime since it was an AFD that was released for the day--not the overnight. Either way, I think I will get lower 40's as I'm now at 39.5/29. Still breezy.

No need to incite other regions Pete.

It's getting ugly out there. Seems that Pete's lost the faith. From his post, it seems the "trust" in his circle is that he trusts he can fly 10 hours to find some snow. lol

CAA is definitely in process. Temps are hovering near 32° AOA 2000' and you can see the difference between places like BDL and the surrounding hills. They are at 45° around 290', I'm 42° at 650' and at 1250' it's fluttering between 39° and 40°. I know it's not as exciting as snow, but it's neat to watch things like this when they do occur.

You can also see the wind (gusts in red) in the attached map.

I just drove down to Greenfield to get my truck (re) inspected. The truck showed 45* in downtown, and 38 in my driveway. Davis reads 38.2/29. OVercast with some weenie flakes.

Consider yourself lucky...I wish I was in on that action.

Impressive temp spike overnight

WOW! That was a nice jump! I hate when it spikes like that and skews the daily temps. We were already 48-50° most of the night before FROPA around 0450. My temp was in the low 30s till about 0800 yesterday and it slowly climbed up.

34/28, breezy. I picked up my friend from AK today and the first thing he said to me was "It's dismally warm, I'm so glad I don't live here anymore." lol

did you get offended and report him? I have been listening to that crap from my Bro who just went back to AK. As he left he said, man great to be headed back where its winter, UGH.

Oh I know what you mean... the forecast products are always tricky to figure out on days with rapidly changing weather. You could have an early high in the 40s at 7am, then cold front drops you to 30F with an afternoon of heavy snow and that thing would read, Today: Snow, heavy at times in the afternoon. High near 45F.
