What's your ideal winter "quilt"

I often conflate those two months. Both mirror images of satan.

February 1998 only saw a trace of snow at Detroit (and only on one day no less), making it the least snowy Feb on record (the previous record holder was Feb 1953 with 0.7", now THAT winter was satan). February 1999, as warm as it was, saw two quick hitting snowstorms, on Feb 7th (4.3") and Feb 25th (3.5"). Both storms melted in 2 days, but at least it was something. I do agree though, that overall that the 2nd half of the 1990s saw mostly abysmal Februaries here. We are now reaping the benefits of karma, seeing unprecedented Feb snowfall since 2007...the running 5-year avg Feb snowfall at DTW is 21.1", more than double average..and this in and of itself created an uptick in avg feb snowfall for the 1981-2010 normals, and we started out the new cycle with 31.7" in Feb 2011.

Toronto saw 0.3" in Feb 1998 and 1.9" in Feb 1999. So our Feb 1999 was way crappier than yours. Then February 2002 came along and that was another disaster with 2.3". Not sure how you made out. But I agree, since about the mid 00s, Februaries have done a 180. Based on my 14 years of imby measurements, Feb is now my snowiest month on average. Before 2006, both Dec and Jan were ahead of it.

To avoid the pointless arguments that tend to ensue on forums, I will just say that January is the only month that has never recorded a non-measurable snowfall month in winter for DTW.

Hi Roy. :P

Lets see

Oct, 2006 = 6.3"

Nov, 2000 = 21.5" Tough call between this and Nov 66.

Dec, 2000 = 52.5"

Jan, 1967 = 31.0" Another tough call between this and 1978 which had 5.6" more inches of snow for the month. Both had a 24+ blizzard BUT 67 had a nice severe wx event right before the blizzard and so yeah i would love to have seen the lead up to all of it.

Feb, 2010 = 38.6"

Mar, 1899 = 23.0" +.. was more but ala missing data. Some unofficial records i saw a few years back showed over 40". It is known that there was Two massive storms.

Apr, 1982 = 17.1"

May, 1923 = 6.0"

Total, 196.0"

Good catch, hi Roy, long time no see! One of the snowiest Februaries/months, hottest July, and wettest years on record....hope you enjoyed some of it :)

Mar 1899 (24.1") and Mar 1900 (30.2") were back to back snowy Marches in Detroit, it sucks that the only reliable records for southern MI that far back are Detroit, and at that you can see the differences that can occur. Jan 1967, PASS lol. Nov 2000, PASS lol, the rest look good. :)

I knew you would not care for Jan 67. As said it was a tough call between that and Jan 78. Forgot that Nov 2000 was not nearly as kind out that way unlike Nov 66 etc which got most of us.

You know my feelings about the data being screwed up around here/BTL. ugh Can get a general feel though via looking at all the other climo sites nearby. Per Lansings data March 1875 ( 23.5" ), 1876 ( 30.0" ) and 1877 ( 34.8" ) really rocked as well. That site has 25.8" for March 1899 and 12.9" for March 1900 which seems about right because the big storms in both cases were more so I94 events.
