What's your ideal winter "quilt"

This is probably a dumb thread idea, but it's boring otherwise, so indulge me.

If you could sew together the perfect winter using any previous winter months (ONDJFMA), what would it look like? Eg, for me:

Oct, who cares

Nov 2002

Dec 2000

Jan 1999

Feb 2008

Mar 2008

April 2003

Sometimes the choices are obvious, other times it's a bit of a struggle to choose. Dec 2008 had more snow here, but Dec 2000 featured that quick hitting blizzard that I'm a big fan of.

The seasonal total for all those months is 140.1" wub.png

Joking Answer: I am going to go with the patchwork quilt my grandmother made for me bout 10 years ago.

Real Answer: I'll just do Dec-March. Dec 2000-Jan 1999-Feb 2011-March 2008. Those 4 months in succession would be 25.1 + 27.3 + 31.7 + 21.0 for a total of 105.1"

I'd rather choose Nov 1950 (20"), Dec 1951, Jan 1966 and I'm fine with the other three.

For the Detroit folks, what was so special about November 1996 locally? I just don't see it...

Anyways, my quilt...

October 2006 or 2007

November 1966

December 1974

January 1978

February 2011

March 2008

April 1886 (or 1982 or 2009)

I just did it for my life on what I experienced. 1996 Was very snowy and cold. Lots of LES up north. That year I experienced a huge LES event in Kalkaska county,MI Where I seen 8" in 3-4 hrs. Over 2 feet in 4 days.

December 1978: 31.4"

January 1979: 40.4"

February 2011: 29.0"

March 1999: 18.2"

April 1982: 10.6"

May 1989: 0.5"

Total: 147.2" :guitar:

I just picked it based on Novembers experienced/in memory. Nov 1996 with 3-5" on the ground on Thanksgiving was definitely the best of the otherwise crummy Novembers of late (Nov 1997 wasnt bad either).

How about this for Detroit folks:

Oct. 1963

Nov. 2001

Dec. 1889

Jan. 1933

Feb. 1998

March 1946

April 1955

May 1998

Ahh..taking the least snowy of each month. Heres the snowiest of each month.

Oct 1989- 2.7"

Nov 1966- 11.8"

Dec 1974- 34.9"

Jan 1978- 29.6"

Feb 1908- 38.4"

Mar 1900- 30.2"

Apr 1886- 25.7"

May 1923- 6.0"

Season total- 179.5" :)

Ah, I see. Otherwise it seems like it was just slightly better than what should be an average November. I don't know if that's quilt worthy overall though.

It was interesting doing that as I found that January was the only month that has never been snowless in recorded history for Detroit!! I did not know. Oh I believe all those months I picked were within the top 5 warmest for the respected month too. So it would end up being the warmest winter ever too if it happened. I mean if it was going to be snowless it better be warm too. Anyway I was doing that for fun!!

I wow can you image 179.5" in Detroit (though personally I would like to skip the 6" in May). Heck the schools would have to keep classes going into July in order to catch up!!! snowing3.gif

If I add up the monthly snowfall for my Winter months of choice I get this;

Nov 1950: 20"

Dec 1951 34"

Jan 1966 28"

Feb 2008 30.3"

Mar 1870 62.4" (LOL)

Apr 1939 12.8"

Total: 187.5"

haha

Actually, December 1889 is the only winter month (DJF) thats ever been completely snowless, for some reason the format DTX uses in their top 20 lists shows a trace as 0.0.

Since 1880

November 1998, 2001, and 2009 had 0.0" snow (an additional 15 Novembers just had a trace)

December 1889 had 0.0"

January 1933 had 0.4"

February 1998 had a trace

March 1946 and 2010 had a trace

April 1925, 1941, 1946, 1981, 1998, and 1999 had 0.0" (an additional 26 Aprils just had a trace)

But yes, Id even take the May snow smile.png It melted in less than 2 days anyway

To avoid the pointless arguments that tend to ensue on forums, I will just say that January is the only month that has never recorded a non-measurable snowfall month in winter for DTW.

For a moment I thought this was a regional knitting thread.

i knit, you gotta problem with that?

i have a bad memory for snow stats...i guess i would rather sew mine together with certain storms...some members love the idea of building a huge snow pack...that's not my fetish...my fetish is experiencing intense snowfall rates...
