Harry
Since I've been recording snowfall in NE Oakland Cty. We average 58" per season. I figure its to high of amount I usually tell people we average 52" a year. Yeah the snowy 2000s did some damage to the averages. If i recall correctly the average here was in the 70s going back to 1999. I usually go with 61" for here. The 30yr is actually a tad higher ( around 65 ) but again the 2000s has really skewed that. GRR has 61.5 but as mentioned earlier it did not count the missing data from the years i mentioned.
Harry
MBY is sitting at 25.4". This is my 17th year of measuring snow now, and my least snowy had been 27.2" in 1997-98. Will this winter be the new low? Way, WAY too early to tell, as even if the next 3 weeks are a torch, we still have a month of measurable snow potential to go. Of course, 17 years is not a long time. When you look at the official numbers, regardless of what happens rest of the way, this is not a benchmark futile winter by ANY means. Detroit (25.9" to date) has already been knocked out of the top 20 least snowy winters list (#20 is 25.1"), so once we can thankfully get this winter out of our minds, it will at least not be there as a constant reminder in the top 20 snowiest/least snowy winters list! So this past decade has seen just one winter in the top 20 least snowy (#19 - 03-04) and FIVE in the top 20 snowy (#4 - 07-08, #5 - 10-11, #9 - 08-09, #10 - 04-05, #13 - 02-03). Still, very painful to look at this year amongst the last 10 imby... 2011-12: 25.4" 2010-11: 69.4" 2009-10: 46.1" 2008-09: 64.8" 2007-08: 78.2" 2006-07: 36.3" 2005-06: 41.9" 2004-05: 82.1" 2003-04: 38.0" 2002-03: 69.0" What was the total there in 03-04? If you had 38.0 then i think the chances are high something was missed? Even though the seasonal total here was 48.3" ( some missing data though so it may be higher ) the numbers ( snowcover, biggest event , temps) says it was better. Solid snowcover from Jan 4th till Feb 28th with 6+ on the ground from about mid Jan till mid Feb peaking at a foot right after a event that dropped 8 inches here. Thus there was atleast one warning criteria event unlike this winter. Other then 06-07 this is the only other time the winter has lacked a warning criteria event since moving here. As far as the numbers go the trend is not your friend here.. 2011-12: 50.0" 2010-11: 63.8" 2009-10: 73.1" 2008-09: 109.6" 2007-08: 98.0" 2006-07: 94.6" 2005-06: 46.2" 2004-05: 81.3" 2003-04: 48.3" 2002-03: 59.6" 2001-02: 88.2" 2000-01: 88.5"

Very dissapointed in their measurments from 2003-04 (24.1") and 2004-05 (63.8"). Somewhat comparable (tho maybe not as bad as) to present-day Toronto YYZ. While I will say that both winters featured a few distinct snowstorms that hit the downriver/east side area harder than DTW (something not seen the past few years when totals have been more uniform), I would estimate them closer to 30" in 2003-04 and closer to 70" in 2004-05. But as you said, a solid snowcover winter for sure, and that makes a difference, HUGE difference for me. 1"+ snowcover days since I began recording them in 2000-01 (I didnt do daily am snowdepth 1995-99 imby). This winter is in a league of its own, even past 2001-02. (However, history shows there have been a small handful of winters with just 10-15 snowcover days, so it has been worse before...just before my time for the most part, sorry Grandpa, you didnt ALWAYS walk uphill in the snow...) ...................MBY.........DTW 2011-12...20 days....20 days 2010-11...81 days....80 days 2009-10...58 days....48 days 2008-09...62 days....60 days 2007-08...69 days....63 days 2006-07...49 days....43 days 2005-06...46 days....40 days 2004-05...65 days....62 days 2003-04...60 days....51 days 2002-03...67 days....63 days 2001-02...35 days....30 days 2000-01...66 days....67 days
smoof
I think that is off? Guessing you got that average via GRR Nowdata? Yeah Lansings new average is 49" even. However that area does not get much LES either. I think even Detroit scores a little more. So it is possible that both places averages about the same. Thus probably around 42-44.. Problem with a number of stations out this way is missing data/snowfall. I believe the true average here is something like 64" because ala in winters like say 01-02/02-03/04-05/05-06 alot of data is missing. A few others too but those are more recent cases i know of. They only count what is showing for the averages.
smoof
nope my average actually sucks since I am in the perfect donut hole of lake effect in michigan (the models pick it up a lot of the time, i only average about 6-10" total of lake effect / enhancement a year), 40" is about average.... edit: i actually envy ppl in wisconsin to freaking the virginias having more lake effect than me, its sad. michsnowfreak
Actually, I can say I have "seen" approximately 37.5" of snow fall this winter, though mby has only seen 25.4". I saw an estimated 12" last Fri/Sat and 0.1" Sunday in Grayling.
