Central PA Thread - Met. Winter 11-12 Obs/Disco

It did seem like things setup a little bit further east in the end when it rolled through. I was originally worried that central PA wouldn't see the brunt of the precip and instead roll up through eastern Ohio and western/northwestern PA. Noticed that 0z NAM had trended a bit east at the last second with heavy precip axis. You still look like your in pretty decent shape, especially if you can get some lake enhancement from those raging winds. Starting to see a pretty decent pivot in the precip shield in NW PA, but it does seem like the Rochester area and south of there might be where some good snows set up.

Further south, couple nice sw-ne oriented bands on north and south sides of Pittsburgh. That should start showing up more in the Laurels and perhaps into the central counties later today. Gonna be some rough going in those bands with the high winds.

Yeah I think it's pretty clear the 18z NAM and GFS from yesterday were too amped up. The cold front flying through like that means the primary wasn't transferring enough energy to the secondary to cause everything to slow down. Still, BUF verified a blizzard and we probably have about 4" or so with a few more inches to come. I think we were saved by the lake because the synoptic dynamics verified weaker and further east.

BTW, OSUmetstud welcome to our lovely little forum! Please come back often, you'll find this is a great haven from the SNE/Mid-Atlantic nonsense. Hell we've had a sh1t winter and none of us (mostly) are really whining too much! :)

All things considered, we are doing well, I think. And OSU is awesome, I agree.

Had a snow shower about 15 minutes ago. What's the outlook for the rest of today in terms of additional snowfall? Side note-the wind is ridiculous. There must be a gap in one of my dorm windows because I feel a draft when it gusts hard.

Looks like an area of light, steady snow is on the way.

yep, very light but steady snow is here. Very tiny flakes. Wind chill of about 5...and with the snow blowing around out there it finally feels like a northern winter!

I just realized, by this time last year MBY just north of Atlanta had received about 9" of snow...so far up here we've gotten about 6" counting today. We should be above 15", I'd imagine. Not whining, just observing.

Can anyone comment on if there are any threats coming down the pipe in the next week to 10 days? At work and cannot look at any models. Thanks

If this disturbance that the GFS has moving through the Great Lakes for next Thursday becomes anything of interest it could at least spawn some lake effect snow for those near the lakes to the north... other than that looks like a number of rain-to-snow-at-very-end-amounting-to-nearly-nothing type set up for the rest of January.

It looks like this.

45+ mph winds, blizzard conditions, snowing at 1 inch+ per hour with over 8 inches so far and counting on the ground. I guess its a great thing to live so close to Lake Erie! :snowing:

With as warm as the lake surface temperatures have been I really am surprised it has taken this long for Buffalo to finally get some good snow! Hopefully you can squeeze out some more before surface temps get too close to freezing mark...

I know 11 inches on the year here in the southern suburbs of Buffalo. We average 110-130 inches per year here. Be lucky to hit 60 this year... At least the lake is 40 degrees, record high for the date and 6 degrees above normal for the year. Hopefully the storm track improves so we can all get some good synoptic systems! =)

Sometimes I see weird blips like that where the forecast will be much different than what it was and then in 30 minutes, go back to what it was before.

Anyone else ever notice that?

Okay, maybe not. There's this:

A WINTER WX ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT UNTIL SATURDAY AFT.

AS WINDS SHIFT MORE TO THE NW LATER TONIGHT...EXPECT SNOW

SHOWERS TO CONTINUE...GIVEN WARMER THAN NORMAL LAKE TEMPS...

AND UPSLOPE CONDITIONS.
