Going on a reconnaissance mission...

Survived, but it was harrowing.

River level - Mostly snow, 36F, slush on windshields, snow looks really pretty in the street lights.

200ft - 35F, light dusting on grass and cars

300ft - 34F, solid coating on grass and cars

400ft - 33F, road completely snow covered, untreated, and few wheel tracks, 0.75"

600ft - 33F, dangerous roads, 1", heavy snow

1000ft - 32F, 1.5"+, snowing heavily and rapidly accumulating. Very dangerous driving conditions.

The changeover occurred in Putnam County extremely rapidly. Areas above 350ft dropped ~5 degrees and went from partially flooded to snow covered roadways in about 30 minutes. Great finale to this storm! snowing3.gifsnowing3.gif

thought you'd get some more out of this...but i did warn you re: the poor snowgrowth in the important layers on the soundings.

you got caught in some crappy precip rates too.

Yeah I was sorry to see the dissipating returns over NWNJ and Orange county... just when the temp profile became supportive of snow. That's frustrating. Hopefully the backside stuff delivers for an hour or two.

To support my observation of a rapid temp drop coinciding with a change to snow:

The Stonykill Mesonet weather station in Fishkill (200ft) reported 40F at 11:07, 38F at 12:07, and 33F at 1:07. The other stations in the area show similar crashing temps. Interestingly stations up near Kingston didn't experience such a rapid temp drop. That's the power of dynamical cooling. So impressive!
