Tropopause_Fold
I understood what he meant, though. I would like to see the CDC, EPO numbers but they haven't updated them since the 4th. The EPO looks split NW-SE, with the southeaster flank pulled negative because it overlaps into a +PNA - that looks rather robust there. The GFS mean isn't hugely different, either. One thing I fiind interesting is the 10-D temp anomalies have gone back negative over much of Canada, the first time since the first week of November. yeah i was more just poking fun. ec ens are fairly neutral with the actual EPO numbers through day 10...kind of jogging back and forth slightly neg/slightly more pos PSD is the same...showing almost daily fluctuations. i didn't know that CPC (i assume that's what you mean when you say CDC?) calculated a daily EPO...do you have a link to that? Yeah, not a shocker hearing that it is nearly neutral - in fact, as I was intimating ...if the PNA did not look positive where the 2 domains overlap, the EPO might just positive in that time frame - similar to the GFS: Eastern Pacific Oscillation(EPO) [(20-35N, 160W-125W) - (55-65N, 160W-125W)] Note, these are provided by PSD ...I KEEP typing the wrong one damn: http://www.esrl.noaa.../images/epo.png http://www.esrl.noaa.../compare.we.png Of course ... these links are calculated off the GEFs members from the 00z run. Typhoon Tip
tropospheric fold? Day After Tomorrow? Ha ha ha lol - it was the day after tomorrow... man was that dopyest big budget for the ignorant masses pos movie! ...about the only thing redeeming about that pond film movie was that girl that got that cut in her leg trying to rescue a D.R. woman right before the physically implausible tsunamis' she is in a dead nut tie for hottiness with that Ann Hathaway. delicious. Actually, the EPO plummeted and resided fairly negative in the week to 10 days prior, and now there is a large plume of llv -20F air sitting near-by W/N of the Bay.. This air being advected across a body of water that is so viscous to begin within = flash.
CoastalWx
EC ensembles sort of look like the op. Roll over ridge into nw Canada. SW US trough. Split flow big time with a trough in the northeast at d10. Pretty far out in time though.

OSUmetstud
00z euro ensembles last night have that low...and some PNA ridging into the west coast and AK...but i'd like to see lower heights in eastern Canada to get interested in keeping the cold locked into the northeast as the low develops and moves northeast. Ginx snewx
Don't know how the rest of you feel but last nights storm has the feel of a pattern changer, not abrupt but signs are better for reorientation of flow to get us out of the +20 regime. The reason lakes flash freeze like that too can be attributed to the fact that in order for a body of water to freeze, the whole volume has to cool to 4*C. Even if it's -20 out, the lake will not freeze quickly because the whole thing needs to reach that critical temp. Once those temps mix in, the top layer freezes and it works down from there. Maybe it was sitting on that threshold and finally broke allowing freezing to take place.
