Kinda disappointed. Ended up with 0.7" here. I went to bed at 1030 and the radar looked pretty impressive but I'm guessing things fell apart rather quickly.

We should be dissapointed, yes, but not surprised. This is setting up to be another poor winter in these parts. Even the cold shot doesn't look as impressive for later this week anymore.

To be fair:

1. 3 out of the last 4 winters have been awesome. So it's not like it's been a trend.

2. I wouldn't ascribe the current crap pattern we're in to the entire winter unless you're riding the 1999-00 bus hard.

But yeah, not much to speak of the next 7 days or so.

We had 0.7" here also, but I was not disappointed, as I was not expecting more than a trace. However, that's all that's left on the ground. Temp this morning is 32. Now looking forward to a dry cool week, with hopefully something out in la-la land.

There is allot of chatter of 1999. I wouldn't mind that winter at all given it had a kick butt Chicago to Detroit ripping Blizzard. Picked up about 14-15 inches to the north of Detroit. I think the city got 12. Although the chances of a 1999 winter are not so hot.

1999-2000, not 1998-1999.

Maybe you should do a little more research on 1999-2000 before stating you wouldn't mind that winter...

What winter? There was a winter that year? Hmm, must've missed it..

Anyways, congrats on the surprise snowfall over in SEMI. Got NADA over here in Marshall, but I'm happy for you guys and I think that all the dire talk of "WARNING - lame winter ahead" is a bit premature. I'm off to the best start since living here 9 yrs and can't possibly consider that a "bad omen" for the season ahead. As stated before, S. MI winters (the better ones anyway) don't really get rolling much before Christmas anyways. Anything before that I could consider "bonus snow". I laughed back on 1-Dec-06 when my buddy told me the local forecasters were calling for a foot on the heals of balmy November temps. It just don't happen here at the front of winter. It can happen later in MET spring, but there's very little history of big snows early. I don't know how temps were running prior to 1-Dec-74, but that is the only exception that comes to mind for SEMI. Of course we can look at Dec 2000 as very snowy before the holidays, but it was a continuation of an early cold autumn pattern and the winter was pretty much that single extreme month and the mid-month bliz was a once in 50 year event for Chi-town up through southern MI.

Enjoy your winter wonderland. I only wish I had taken photos of mine last week to share and remember it by. It was sweet early "bonus season" action!

Yeah, things were looking really good until about 10 pm when everything suddenly fell apart. The snow started to melt as soon as the precipitation ended, and it was more or less completely gone by noon. Oh well, we had snowcover for half a day, at least.

Yes, 1999-2000 was mild.

Maybe 25-30" in southeast Michigan. It seemed like it was about 20". I could rarely locate any snow depths over 2", even though the numbers of monthly snowfall turned out sort of OK for Detroit Metro. 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 were the La Nina winters that gave up on trying to be cold in the North, and decided to set some warm temperature records instead. (All except for the great blizzard and arctic attack of January 1999, and LES snows Dec 1998.)

Detroit Metro

DECEMBER +3.7 degrees

JANUARY +1.7 DEGREES

FEBRUARY +6.5 DEGREES

DECEMBER 4.3 INCHES

JANUARY 9.6 INCHES

FEBRUARY 8.1 INCHES

Yes 1999-00 was a very sucky winter. 29.3" imby, but only 23.7" reported at DTW. This 23.7" makes it the 18th least snowy winter on record. There were no big snowstorms, the best being a storm that dropped 4" at DTW (5" imby) on Feb 18/19, though this was hyped to be a 6-12" storm. The one thing you were incorrect about was the snow depth. We actually had a period of constant snowcover from Jan 13th thru Feb 22nd, a period which also saw persistent cold and frequet light snowfall. So at the very least winter activities could be done. While the snow depths ranged from 1-5" at DTW during this time (majority of the time was 3-4"), many areas outside the airport did have several days of 6-7" depth around Feb 4-6th (when the official depth was 4"). Outside this period, however, in early Jan and late Feb/early Mar, record or near record high temps occurred. Certainly it was a very boring winter from all accounts though.

With regards to 1999-2000 and 1998-1999...

1998-1999 was definitely the superior winter, but it's like a competition between who's the skinniest kid in fat camp. Neither winter was stellar.

That said, it's still a good chance this will be a back-end winter (which is why the forecasts remain generally the same despite what's looking to be a relatively crappy December). It's just knowing when that's causing all the anticipation and frustration.

That was the BEST stretch of winter I have ever experienced, was the first half of Jan 99. Over 40" in 2 weeks and it was bitterly cold. I would love for another stretch like that. Even if it means 67 degrees in February. 27" snow depth at one time. If you didnt have 4 Wheel drive you couldn't get out of my neighborhood. NO JOKE!

1999/2000 sucked. It was uneventful
