No... JAN 1996 was, from the get go, was going to be a monster. That huge cutoff low was shown on the ECMWF, which was correct and it showed it slammed DC-BOS with 20": amounts.

BUT no model had PHL Metro getting 30+.

For me, DEC 2010 beats it in wind and snow rates.... and of course, I tracked on here with you guys! snowing3.gif

I specifically remember Sam Champion showing a graphic with a low aroubd Georgia and two possible tracks, one of which being a track straight out to sea and the other was up the coast.

You're too young to judge 1996.

I'm sorry.

How old were you then? 5? 6?

No one should compare the 2 unless they were at least teenager age.

the euro had 96 pegged from a week out. it was the usual SE bias of the gfs that kept the tv mets from forecasting big totals. but from what ive read around here and other places, alot of the mets not in the public eye saw it coming for days. the pattern was so damn beautiful.

remember those days...had to rely on TWC and local networks for the weather....

Correct.....dec 2010 hands down worse blizzard I seen......these guys need to stop dry humping 96.....plus there was breaks in the snow and a postal hugger washed it away in a week imby.....pretty bad flooding

96 covered a much larger area and it was soooo long that its still to this day, considered the grandfather of EC snowstorms. however, boxing day last winter was more intense...just in a smaller area.

i still rate 96 as #1, boxing day #2. but they are really close for IMBY...but i could understand folks that prefer boxing day.

back in the mid 90's, the only real wx board was ne.weather, which AOL hosted thanks to Todd Gross

there's no need to rewrite history on how the Bliz of 96 evolved because you can read it in ne.weather

here's a link starting the last few days of 12/95

note the one thread started by Larry Cosgrove entitled "Extended Forecast Discussion"

from what I can see, that discussion was one of the earliest, if not first, to mention of the possibility of the storm

Just finished my synoptic term paper on the Dec 2010 blizzard... I don't remember '96 very well at all, but I'm biased and inclined to believe that Boxing Day may have matched it (for this area, of course... not nationally).

in your very localized area to the west of the city, yeah. for the entire metro area? Im not so sure.

lol. I was old enough to remember the epic snow piles and my family digging it out for several hours...

But weather wise, I just learned about the forecast online via archives.

Thanks jake.....for our area it was by far the best....like john touch on, the way it unfolded was amazing. Even the pictures from the city where breath taking.....like a scene out if the day after tomorrow. Counted over 100 stranded cars on the gsp between Holmdel and red bank. My only regret is not taking a picture of the stranded cars, overlooking it from Holmdel road.....perfect match to lake shore drive in chicago.

Same with january last year.....not trying to disrespect, but a post in that obs thread you wrote this was the best storm u experienced.

It was a great storm. Very close to 1996.

But for my area, 1996 was the best by far. NE Queens received 25"+ from 1996 with some reports of 30"-35".

For your part of Jersey, can't argue with you that Dec. 2010 was better.

P.S. Jan. 27,2011 ended being my favorite storm last year and my 2nd favorite storm ever, behind 1996.

It's all where you live I guess,

But 1996 was the king of all east coast snowstorms. Blanketed the entire eastern seaboard with 15"-40" of snow, up and down the coast.

I really hope this board as a community gets to experience a similar storm to 1996 where we all get buried with historic snow amounts.

I did say I might be biased. Again, I don't really remember '96 (I was 5 I think, lol). But wind gusts in the upper 50s, thundersnow, and a final total of 25"? Hells yes! I don't think I'll top it any time soon...

I think this picture really captures the impact of the storm... like out of a movie, except it is Brooklyn.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't he referring to the 1/2-1/3 event? I recall that was originally supposed to be more significant than it ended up being. Here we got a couple inches and then some ice on top. It did help usher in the arctic airmass at the end of the week that set us up for the blizzard though

For your part of Jersey, Dec. 2010 is unmatched. 1996 is probably a tie for your area.

But 1996 buried everyone from DC to Maine. And the entire NYC metro received 20"-35" of snow, at a time where LGA measured it as DEPTH, at the end.

That's due to the sanitation department cluster**** that occurred.

1996 also had these same scenes but there were no cell phone cameras, Facebook, twitter, etc. to capture it. The LIE had cars piled up and stuck for 24 hours.
