Ozarkwx
The frost flowers appear in late fall when the ground is still unfrozen and the liquid in the stems of certain plants freeze and expand, breaking through the stemwall, forming paper thin ice designs. Quite delicate, detailed and overall amazing in their intricate variety.
tamarack
Fascinating! In 65 years living in cold climates, I've never seen anything like those. Before seeing the pics, I thought you might be showing what we call frost candles, which form from very wet soil when serious cold arrives. The pre-Thanksgiving cold snap in 2008 grew frost candles nearly a foot high on part sof the snowmobile trail thru my woodlot.
Ozarkwx
Near ideal frost flower conditions are needed for something like this! Unfrozen moist soil with lows about 20 degrees, a clear sky allowing for heavy frost overnight and a bright sunrise but with temps taking a bit to initiate melting. And finally, after looking at this for a while, I started to see a face. It finally occured to me that it reminded me of a caricature of Bobby Kennedy - say like the kind the New Yorker Magazine might create.
