All,

We just received word from NESDIS that EMWIN on GOES 12 will be taken off line temporarily. We are currently not sure of all the details and will update the list as soon as we have additional information.

All,

Apparently GOES 12 is having some problems with interference and NESDIS is working to isolate the problem. As they work on this, EMWIN will be down on GOES 12 at least until tomorrow morning. GOES 12 EMWIN Users should use byteblaster as a backup until service is restored.

+1!

If you think about it, we (RDU), are super due for a good early-mid January snow event. We haven't had a 4" early-mid Jan event since 2002 (10 years). We did have a 5" snow event on Jan 30th in 2010, so the end of Jan. We need something in the heart of January, that's why I still like my my call for the first accumulating snow of Jan 11th. Last snow event I could find in the range of January 7-21th is 1996, 16 years ago. I was in Winston at the time, it delayed my return to college a few days, great storm.

lmaosmiley.gif The guy that does my landscaping came by this morning and said he heard it was going to snow this weekend and wanted to "prep" my yard and driveway. I asked him if he really heard it was gong to snow or was work just slow right now. You should seen his face. Guess he didn't know I was a weatherologist.pimp.gif

I will say this again on a positive note. These temps beat the heck out of walking outside and it being +90 all summer. I'm enjoying the break from the heat. My garden will also appreciate all of this rain next spring. So, it's not all bad. But winter is my favorite season and the worse the weather, the happier I am. That's pretty sick I know!

Good one right there...he was obviously messing with the wrong guy.

Yep, you're right. And Jan is probably the best time to get a good storm. The sun angle is still low, and it's the coldest part of Winter, climo-speaking. I hope this is the year that we get a big January storm.

Tony, it does feel kinda weird here. After being spoiled like most here (relatively speaking, of course)the past two years, for it being the middle of Dec it feel like it's October.

And, no, my boating excursions are on hold until spring..........I've seen things, man....yikes.png

Hang in there, Joe!! It's coming. Just wait. Starting with my Guess the Storm grand prize after Xmas....it's already on the map. It will be a cut off in the 4 corners spitting out energy packets into a split stream, with the mother of all highs building in. A 4peat. This will be the winter to end all winters. Well...hmmm...now wait a minute. You've already had over 100 inches in one season...maybe that was your winter of winters. Nope, never mind. You may be relative toast smile.png Might have to do with 50 or 60 ..but it might all come with one storm, lol.

Meanwhile, my faded front still wants to shoot a sw up into Ga late week and give me some much needed rain. Just need it south like it was some days back... before it wasn't smile.png Groovy...fantasy is so much better than realitythumbsupsmileyanim.gif T

I know many of you aren't happy about the pattern we're in but I'm glad to have it! I'd rather have something to track every 5 to 7 days than the typical La Nina pattern. With all these brief shots of rain we've managed to pick up ONLY 1.14" axesmiley.png . Oh well... At least there's another chance for rain this week, even if it is supposed to hang up in the Tennessee River Valley again...

Here are some observations about NEXT week's system: http://davidwarrenreese.blogspot.com/

Oh, and I don't know if you guys saw this... but... yeah.... haha! Doesn't look good for hotdog.gif : http://www.climatewatch.noaa.gov/image/2011/2011-2012-winter-outlook

Ha! Well, my 1.5 month lead on a Dec. 20/21 storm isn't looking good at all right now. I don't know man...Cold Rain might be out of phase this year. We'll see....:D

Even the 12-16 day portion of the run is terrible on the 6zGFS. Pretty much, it's on to mid-late January - even later than I would have thought a few days ago.

I wouldn't be so sure. I know the indexes don't look great at this point, but it's only the 13th of December. I think it will take another week or so to get into a look on the models that consistently support change. A lot of times when models begin flirting with change they are onto something, but in a rushed manner. Around Christmas we should have an idea as to what is coming in January (at least the beginning two weeks). If it's not showing on the models consistently by that time, then it might be mid to late January. I still think we can score cold and an opportunity for snow in the first couple of weeks of January.

I agree. December is out imo but there is no telling what the first half of January might bring. I don't think we will have a decent early January but we certainly could. I agree we should be able to get a feel for the first part of January around Christmas.

Any chance for a major winter-storm this month that impacts >1/3 of the SE is pretty much nil imo... I do think there will be at-least one more window for winter-type before the new year, and you guessed it, probably between the 24th & 28th.

I like your optimism Chris, but man it's just so hard to get excited this first quarter of Winter. I've been trying I promise.
