If it weren't so dry, someone in Charlotte would be getting something right now.

this reminds me of the clipper a couple weeks back. One hour the precip was shown on radar over the TN, NC border and the very next hour I had sleet pellets. It can really jump the mountains quickly. Hopefully we get a little development going sooner than expected.

I just went out for the first time in a while and found a nice glaze over everything... my car, the mailbox, and approximately 10 feet of my driveway that I slid down while doing pinwheel impressions with both arms and making those oooo-eeee-aaaah-oooo sounds we know from icy weather. Sadly, I may skip my trivia tonight due to the roads.

I make those sounds too but from something totally different. whistle.gif

DP holding steady around 25 with temps up to 30 here. It's an absolute mess out there. Anyone in the northern metro step outside and listen to how many sirens are blaring. I'm not able to get off of my street since it's steep and mostly iced over, and my friend texted me that it took him an hour to make a 10 minute drive due to an insane amount of accidents and road closures. It won't last too much longer with temps starting to rise a bit, but it's bad while it lasts.

Look at the reflection from the lights across the street from my house, the road looks wet. It's frozen. You can see it here (http://www.daculawea....com/camera.php) or on my main page toward the bottom. I think the camera only supports 10 streams at once but flail away.

Put the camera on the 914 and F mod please :arrowhead:.

I hope some of that frozen stuff heads up this way.....looks like it will!

I thought about that, and wondered if we could be repeating that again for this go around. I say we could if precipitation can get its act together.

I had about 5 minutes worth of light snow a little while ago. I was also told it came a good little period of snow in athens. Didn't last long but was pretty I was told.

Now it's just a very light sleet/flurry mix. So the warm air is coming. Enjoy your snow while it lasts.

33/18 right now. Even so, the snow/sleet isn't really melting as far as I can tell. Not expecting a whole lot here, but the band to the west has the potential to lay down I glaze I suppose.

about the same here, a couple of 5-10 min of light snow. too bad we couldnt get just a bit more precip in a little earlier.

my sister just called (she drives a school bus) and wanted to know, so I'm saying usually the officials are probably banking on a 2 hour delay anyway when a WWA is issued, and thats likely to verify judging downstream. Even though our temps will probably be right at 32 by 7 am, give or take a couple hours, the roads could be slick from the snow and sleet accum and probably by then the change has already occurred to ZR. So, I'd bank on a mess, unless for some reason this county gets basically skipped. I've seen that before as well, so its always touch and go living here, with those mountains toying with us so much lately.

your snow has already switched over?

hey - didnt get to post before the upgrade. radar is showing snow, but the last batch that moved through was actually sleet. its 29.1 with a dewpoint of 21

some more substantial returns are heading in soon so we'll see what happens.

thanks staff for getting us up so fast and keeping updated on twitter!

22 with DP 7. I can see the clouds a coming off to my west and they should be here within the hour. I cant recall the last time I started off a winter weather event this cold. The Roads, Ground, lakes ponds creeks are all frozen hard as a brick.

whats up NCSNOW, im pretty close to your area right now at my girlfriend's mom's house. little subdivision off 49 near the airport. looks like the airport fixed their crappy thermometer finally. its been a lot more accurate this winter so far. amazing its so cold already.

Bro, i live over on HWY 49. Do you really think any of that precip will get to us or will the dry air eat it up?

if you look at the obs map, clearly the southerly winds aim from central GA right to western SC and southern NC. My temp has gone from 29 to 30 to 31 just now in less than 2 hours. Wetbulb was 27 and dewpoints are coming up fast on the southwest wind. When you get closer to the mountains in GA they don'thave the great warming at the surface due to some upslope there, so my opinion is that western SC and southern NC is in a very, very bad spot for this event. Also, the RUC simulation shows a complete skip for a few hours in southern NC right over my area (surprise), then redevelopment points east. Western SC gets just a few token sleet to ZR but is very quick so its an extremely quick event to possibly nothing almost there. Really depends on radar but I don't have much faith in this setup now after given it more thought (for this area to CLT) . Points north and closer to the mountains things change quickly, more moisture, colder air and being in the steady moisture keeps the boundary layer cooler for much longer than southern /southwest NC. We'll see what the next few hours hold, but the southwest winds and nothing to block it here means this event is extremely limited here both duration and intensity (not that it ever looked like much, but I have serious doubts of staying subfreezing at the surface past 6 am).

It's great to be back!

Read reports of roads in GA being awful with just very light icing.

Part of the reason for all the carnage is people not being aware of the ice. The average person might check the weather before going to work, see that just rain is predicted, see rain falling as they get ready to leave, and assume there is no ice to worry about. If FFC had honked the ZR horn earlier there would have been far fewer people on the roads, and those who were on the roads would likely know of the danger.
