im in west central ga. Will be interesting to see how long any precip takes to reach the ground. In reality it may not start falling for many hours which in turn the temp would be above 32 im sure. It will be a close call to see if any freezing rain falls in Ga which such dry air and borderline temps. Yea the DP is low I know for some evp. cooling.

i agree. i think they would be foolish not to issue freezing rain advisory with precip on the way and temps not climbing very fast.

Oh I have no doubt they will its the fact it should have already been addressed. I mean more reports from Alabama and the moisture is on its way....I just check my hometime stats in Dalton. Temp of 27 with a dew point of 12. Means not only is it below freezing its gonna drop some when precip arrives around lunch time. The ground is frozen solid already with sub freezing temps since Sunday.

More Ice Notes…

*Wreck on Warrior River Road, overturned in a ditch (western part of Jefferson County)

*Emergency Mngr in Vernon: Most bridges in Lamar County are covered with a light glaze of ice.

*Bridges are getting iced over in Fayette county, couple of wrecks reported due to ice

*A number of wrecks reported on Alabama 216 east of Tuscaloosa (Brookwood area)

*Ice on eastern valley road from Tannehill state park to the middle school.

*Numerous accidents now reported due to icy bridges near Prattville in Autauga County (north of Montgomery)

Below is a shot of the Hugh Thomas Bridge (U.S. 43), which connects Tuscaloosa and Northport. Our SKYCAM at the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse is showing 31 degrees…

Got this from Tennessee Wx site where a guy who works for EMA office in Huntsville gets NWS radio briefings and heres his synopsis of the report:

HUN is starting a new Wx Briefing right now rather than waiting until 10am..

WWA still valid.

Reports of precip reaching the ground in NW AL and down the I65 corridor south of I565

WWA will be continued through 9pm

Warm air will come in and warm things up towards the end of the event.

Current forecast is on track, maybe a little earlier.

Precip will be lighter to the south and greater to the north (of current positions).

Treacherous conditions are starting to take place on bridges and overpasses, and some secondary roads where the precip is reaching the ground.

Temps will warm above freezing late this evening, but ice will still be around until sfc warms.

Secondary low is forming over AR, which is going to enhance moisture inflow as the system moves north/northeast.

Travel problems in the NW corner of the state will start occurring between now and 10am. Some schools still in session in that area.

Although the FZRA is light, it is having no issues covering the roads.

There is still a drier surface layer to the N/NE, but since the precip is gaining moisture, it won't take long to saturate the column and begin reaching the ground.

NWS advised counties that the 11am early dismissal time may not be early enough to avoid travel issues getting students home. It's possible early dismissals will be rescheduled based on statement from the counties.

Again, this is per the NWS HUN briefing at 8am

Yet NWS FFC is not gonna warn anyone on the impending danger until its too late. Students driving in this could be fatal. Heck anyone.

Basically they say nothing?

Statement as of 9:39 AM EST on December 15, 2010

... A wintery mix of precipitation expected over portions of north

Georgia late this afternoon and evening...

A warm front in central Mississippi will gradually move northeast

through Alabama tonight and into north Georgia on Thursday. This

front will cause a wintry mix of precipitation to move into northwest

Georgia late this afternoon and the remainder of north Georgia this

evening. Surface temperatures are expected to be above freezing when

the initial precipitation begins late this afternoon. Light rain

or sleet can be expected with areas of freezing rain possible just

after sunset as temperatures hover around the freezing mark.

Spotty ice accumulations can be expected... especially on bridges

and overpasses... which may cause hazardous driving conditions.

Motorists are advised to use caution and slow down.

As the warm front approaches north Georgia during the night

temperatures will gradually rise into the mid to upper 30s. This

will change over any frozen or freezing precipitation to all rain.

Rainfall amounts of one quarter to one half inch can be expected

on Thursday through Thursday night.

Horrible statement..Temps will be in the upper 20s at best during most of evening as precip falls in NW GA Even when they go above overnight the ground is still frozen so its still gonna be slick spots...Who ever is in that office in charge of warning the public which is prob most of them should be out of there. I just wished either HUN covered NW GA or they re open the Chatt office cause they cannot make an accurate winter forecast for there entire area for anything.

temp has barely moved this morning. DP is 9 with a temp of 22. Clouds are rolling in now so I find it hard to believe we get much above freezing today unless the clouds break. DOT has begun treating roads around here just incase anything falls tonight.

Yep this could be interesting with the initial moisture that falls.
