O Canada!

Our home and native land!

True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,

The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

I like the way the Canadian's looking! thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

Birmingham just issued a Freezing Rain Advisory. http://www.daculawea...rgia_master.php Looks like some good returns on the radar.

This isn't surprising to me, but is to the models. All along, the models have gone with minimal or no QPF in this area (and consequently, places further north and east). But if you look at the 293K isentropic surface and plot the condensation pressure deficits, the current area of radar returns matches up almost perfectly to where you would expect precip to be falling. Somehow, the models missed out on this!

WRAL has made their first call -

Raleigh, N.C. — The Triangle could see a trace to 2 inches of snow Thursday morning. Areas northward could see up to 3 inches, while those south of the Triangle will most likely see sleet and freezing rain, according to WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner.

Already overachieving in Alabama and Miss including a fatality already...and just gettin going...

From James Spann ABC 33/40 in BHM:

7:00 Notes

James Spann | 7:00 am December 15, 2010 | Comments (1) *Freezing rain, mixed with some sleet, continues to increase over the western half of Alabama this morning. Remember, sleet (ice pellets) rarely causes travel problems, but freezing rain is the real issue (liquid precipitation that falls with surface temperatures are 32 or below)

*NWS Birmingham has issued a freezing rain advisory through noon for Bibb, Fayette, Jefferson, Lamar, Marion, Pickens, Shelby, Tuscaloosa, Walker, and Winston Counties.

*The precipitation is moving to the east/northeast, and will impact the rest of the state later today. The cold air is deeper over Northeast Alabama, where ice issues are certainly going to be a problem.

*Bridges are the main issue; the regular road surfaces will be just wet. With the cold infrastructure, ice will form on bridges and overpasses in a heartbeat.

*There is concern that ice will indeed form on the long bridges that make up the Birmingham interstate system within the hour.

Some spot reports…

*”Hey James, driving from Winfield to Tupelo this morning the bridges are starting to get icy. The large bridge that goes over the Tenn-Tom waterway in Fulton MS has ice on it. My wife said the bridge going into Hamilton before you get to the Church of Christ on old 78 is getting slick. Have a good day. Sure you have plenty of these reports to go around.”

*A traffic fatality in East Mississippi could be related to an icy bridge

*Tuscaloosa reports no travel issues, but some ice has formed on exposed surfaces.

*A light glaze on exposed objects has been reported at the NWS at the Shelby County Airport.

BOTTOM LINE: Take it easy out there… and watch for bridge icing!

More from Spann:

More Ice Notes…

James Spann | 7:46 am December 15, 2010 | Comments (1) *Tuscaloosa Police have closed the Paul Bryant/Eastern Bypass bridge near Holt after several accidents.

*Many accidents now being reported due to icy bridges over Bibb County

*Dallas County is reporting many ice covered bridges… this is deep into Central Alabama (the Selma area)

*In Marion County, roads and bridges county wide covered with a light glaze of ice and numerous accidents.

*Wreck on Warrior River Road, overturned in a ditch (western part of Jefferson County)

*Emergency Mngr in Vernon: Most bridges in Lamar County are covered with a light glaze of ice.

*Bridges are getting iced over in Fayette county, couple of wrecks reported due to ice

*A number of wrecks reported on Alabama 216 east of Tuscaloosa (Brookwood area

this is already quickly becoming a big problem! Looks like FFC will be playing catchup AGAIN esp. for there northern counties...
