NYC Banter and BS Thread Part IV

2008-2009 was good for NYC and LGA. 27"-30".

What was the coastal Jersey total?

It was decent. I recorded 29.5" in Monmouth County, probably made it sound worse than it was. But even still, there were a ton of events in Dec-Jan that screwed my area. Much of Jan featured dead grass with scattered patches of snow on the ground.

I received 33" in NE Queens and I clearly remember at least 10-12 snow events.

You theme song of that winter should probably be titled "Saved by a Gravity Wave"

According to ag3 this is his dream scenario. In fact he almost prefers them.

Give me last year's so called 30 day winter every single time (which it really wasn't.) Screw March.

If I had a choice I'd have all my snow in the Dec-Jan period when the sun angle is lowest. Last winter was darn near my ideal winter, if it just started about a week or so earlier in Dec.

January 2009 had a -4.2 temp anomaly for LGA with 5 snow events of over 1". And a total of 9". Also featured 6 other days of traces with coatings and snow squalls.

14 days also featured high temps of 32 degrees and below.

A VERY cold month with snow. A very wintry feel month. Only 6 days got into the 40's.

I remember several events Upton didn't even issue any type of advisory with several inches on the ground. Every disco said FM, no big deal, and several events were during rush hour and quite treachorous.

Agreed. A little earlier in December and some more snow in the first half of February and it would have been my perfect winter.

If you compare December 1995 to January 1996...

Last winter beats it hands down.... it was the greatest 30 day period we have ever seen....

Feb '07.

Yes, another brutally cold month.

For me, the king is January 2004... I still recall walking outside during that clipper at 7 degrees and recall going outside when it was zero degrees in Jan 18, I believe it was.

Coldest Nor'easter for me is January 2005... it was 9 degrees at noon, I'd never forget it.

yes.

2004 should have done it.... There was too much wind, I believe.

Three factors killed it, there was alot more clearing the day before than was ever anticipated behind the clipper, as a result the highs reached 21-22 when the forecast was 16-18, the NAO was going positive and the core of the coldest 850 temps went a bit more NE toward Boston. I believe Boston by 11pm was -3 or -4 and NYC was still 5 or 6. The wind was also a bit too NW'ly I think which tends to cause a downslope, if the 850s are not at least -28C I think the wind needs to be more due northerly for NYC to go below 0....wind and strong cold air advection is actually required historically for NYC to go below 0, on nights where its calm NYC has generally struggled to go below 0 because a bit of a heat island effect is maximized it seems.
